http://www.wrcbtv.com/Global/story.asp?s=12139979&clienttype=printable UPDATE MONDAY, MARCH 15th 6 PM CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - A makeshift lock on a chain link fence was no match for the dog employees at Mann's Welding call Winston. The 80-pound pit bull mix managed to break free Sunday. That's when Michael Emerling received a call from police. "When they said he attacked a car," said Emerling, "I wasn't prepared for what I saw." Winston chewed the front bumper of a patrol car completely off, bit through two tires, and left teeth marks in the side panel of the vehicle. The Chattanooga Police Officer behind the wheel was clocking speed when Winston launched his attack. The Officer was sitting in his car, filling out a report when he says the car began shaking. That's when he got out of the car and discovered the dog attacking his car. The Officer used pepper spray, and then a stun gun but not even that could stop the dog. "The dog apparently rolled over and started chewing on the prongs, pulling them out of his skin," said Officer Rebecca Royval, spokesperson for CPD, "then he kept going." Royval says when back up arrived Winston then chewed the tires of the other patrol car. Eventually the dog was captured by animal control officers, with the help of one of his owners. "Obviously at some point yesterday he was not a nice dog," said Emerling, "but previous to that he was very sweet." Emerling says Winston will occasionally show aggression toward lawn equipment, but has never hurt anyone.

After Winston's arrest, there was mass outcry to save Winston. Perhaps because of the chutzpah of a dog to dissasemble a police car. Perhaps because many human citizens would secretly like to do the same <g>. Tokyo has Godzilla, New York has King Kong, and now Chattanooga has Winston. After 10 days in solitary, based on good behavior he has been placed on probation. He must go to obedience school, wear a PDD "Potentially Dangerous Dog" tag, and promise to stay inside his fence and not eat any more police cars. Here is some local news footage, the original incident, his victorious release, and dashcam video of the crime. A potentially dangerous dog tag??
Who's gonna live thru reading it? Truth is, he apparently didn't bite anybody, so ...

Hi Bob
The owner said he's never been any trouble except occasionally showing aggression toward lawn equipment. Makes one wonder how the lawn machinery survived the encounter <g>.
I have a mutt who gets fantastically upset by lawn mowers, concrete mixers, chipper-mulchers. Anything with an engine. She would like to eat them and we have to put her up so she doesn't try. I don't think she is strong enough to do any damage to the equipment, though.

I saw that on the news last night. Pretty funny. They were running radar at the time. I wonder if it somehow bothered the dog.

My old dog (a Big Swiss) yawns, grunts and rolls over in boredom... She attacks combine harvesters before breakfast (she wishes) And God forbid anyone from playing their instrument badly in her presence - she makes a swift 'delivery' right in front of them for insulting her ears to show them what she thinks of them OTOH, she loves music and musicians and food and cuddles and is the friendliest dog on the planet! She would rather 'kiss' you to death

There was a time when the story would have read, "Automobile bumper cannot survive dog attack..."
Yeah, I'm an engineer.
See, I want to know what make and model car has this incredibly durable bumper on it. *not*

There's an old joke about dogs chasing cars, and what would they do if they caught one. Now we know.
Cheers, Keith

When I was a kid, I had an otherwise gentle dog who hated motorcycles. I remember him spilling a couple of fellows in the snow.

I knew a guy that got hurt rather badly by a dalmation that chased his Triumph Bonneville "back in the day". 35mph zone and the doggone dog caught him, looked like the dalmation tried to jump on the bike with him for a second there.
We used to tease him because the dog got up, shook itself off and trotted calmly away from the scene of the mayhem.
He, on the other hand, suffered a hospitalizing injury plus more than his fair share of road rash.

Hi Mac The bumperless police car was a Ford. But perhaps most modern bumpers wouldn't be up to the task. A Ford Edsel would have given Winston more of a challenge--

Yeah, most police cars are Ford Crown Vic "Police interceptor" platform.
Soon to be replaced with the Ford Taurus Interceptors, touting a V6 that uses "EcoBoost" twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 provides "at least" 365 hp, which is channeled to all four wheels.
Hello, that's Hemi V8 territory out of a V-6? Me want.
Gotta love the marketing department, "Ecoboost". Yeah. Uhuh.

Mac, Don't look past a Cadillac CTS with 3.6L V6. 308 HP to all 4 wheels, but in a chassis tuned on the Nurburgring, 18 mpg city 27 mpg highway. Go fast in all directions - though I do like the styling of the new 'Taurus' (Ford 500 with a new name). I like the CTS styling better and I know the engineers that tuned that car (myself included just a bit)

Jim Croce sang about being "meaner than a junkyard dog". Looks like Winston could create his own junkyard. Just give him a good supply of cop cars and he's well on his way. LOL. Bob

There are so many gruesome puns. Compared to some of them, Mac's example is mild. I recall some terrible joke from long ago that had the punch line, "Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?"
