I am shaking the cob webs out of my old DAW after a fix or two. I notice that when playing files in RB i get a slight delay or mised note sometimes. I remember this from before on my laptop, and can't recall the fix. it seemed it was rather simple then.
Any thoughts.
Specs: AMD XP 2400+ with 1 gig of ram, XP of course. M-Audio 24/96, No internet, no autoupdate, and no firewalls and AV

Was it switching MME to ASIO or vice versa? Making sure the correct drivers are chosen in the audio drivers area (not soundmapper, etc) Or is it MIDI that is messing up(?)
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

It is midi, and i am thinking io might not have the resolution set high enough.

If using an ASIO driver, make sure the "asio always on" box is checked in audio driver window.

I checked that one and it was. What it is doing is it seems to be missing notes every now and again. plus i seem to have problems with several Synths i used before. like Sampletank free 1 and 2. Both seem to be too loud and full of static and pops. I love the sounds of ST but i have to mix down and lower the volume manually to get it right. Plus the volume faders have no control over ST of even a fwe other VStis.

Static and pops is definitely the asio driver. Which one are you using? Also, your comment about the volume sliders not working with some synths is correct. I've always assumed that's part of the incomplete VST implementation in Real Band. When using a softsynth with that problem I render the track to audio, then everything works.

That is what i have been doing to get around the synth issues. As far as the ASIO i am using the M-Audio driver i have had for every, and i have tried MME as well and both are doing this skipping halting thing. I also added a gig of ram, so that the unit has 2 gigs not on a AMD 2400+ XP machine with no internet or anything else.

This may or may not help you. When my AMD was acting out like that I disabled the onboard realtec and asio4all. I also have to regularly defrag and empty the recycle bin. Updated my emu asio drivers and only use that. No more popping and halting.

I would be checking the IRQ table to see what else is being shared with that soundcard.
To get to your IRQs, go to "Start", "Run", type in "msinfo32" and click "OK". In the left window, click on the "Hardware Resources" plus sign, click on "IRQs" and, after "polling" the computer, it will display what IRQ each peripheral is assigned to in the right window.
Ignore the Windows' reports of "no conflict". Bah.
Instead, make good and sure that the IRQ number for the soundcard *is not being shared by any other device*.
If it is, the only solution is to shut down the machine and move the card to another PCI slot, reboot and check again.

I will boot up the old DAW and see what has happened. Mac that might be it, but will know in a few seconds, as i added a USB 2.0 card the other day.
Good catch Mac, the PCI to USB card was also on 10, which used to be just the M audio card alone.
Testing now to see if that fixed the problem. ..............
Darn, it not only did not remove the PCI to USB card from the IRQ address but it added it again to number 10, now there are three things listed on 10. Is there a way to remove these things

When XP came out, microsoft didn't let us *easily* manually change IRQs, it is called, "ACPI" or something like that. The only way I know to do this without resorting to strange registry tweaks and loss of shutdown via software is to remove cards and replace and reboot.
Depending on how many PCI cards and slots you have, this can be easy or it can take some time.
Shut down the PC and remove all cards temporarily.
Boot the PC and let XP cleanup.
Shut down again and install *only* the soundcard first. We are looking for the best possible PCI slot here, the "master" -- which is typically located closest to the video card slot on most mobos, though not always. I'd start there, though.
Now boot up the PC with just the soundcard in there and go through the hardware install. Then check the IRQ table.
If card is pristine, all by itself, then you can start adding the other cards - one at a time and checking IRQs between bootups.
**Websearch engine, find "PCI Latency Checker" download and run it, see what it reports.
***A PC not on the web may be suffering from very old windows code due to no windows updates. There have been key updates made to help solve these problems and you should investigate that at windows updates site.

thanks i will look into all that. So far i have re seated the cards a couiple times in different configs, and not the sound card is back on 10 with nothing but the USB host with it and it seems to be fine. There is nto halting, and no studdering. I also place the "C" drive on IDE 1 and the "D" drive on IDE 2 that seemed to speed the process up tremedously. Now i need to find out how to shut down automatic updates completely it is the only nag i still get.
I also removed the Network card as i do not use it at all. If i need to add something i move it with a flash or small external hard drive.

Yep, putting those two drives on separate IDE's is a good move. It helps speed things up. Another tip is to have your temp audio pointed at the second drive..
Turning off autamatic updates is done thru the control panel in XP, you should see an icon or listing for it.
Funny how those assigned slots and IRQ's can really wreak havoc in a system. Glad ya got it figgered out! Now to see if the USB sharing will affect the card, especially if you use the external hard drive to run things.
My main DAW is the same way, no connections to any other system (unless I use a crossover LAN cable intentionally). This helps keep it stable. I download an update occasionally and install it. I find I have less trouble from lack of updates than I do from the hassles of keeping it updated. If I have a problem I'll look into the updates, or when a new service pack is released and stable I'll install it. Most of the updates ares security related (which I don't need since it is not networked) but ocassionally a core feature is updated. Flash drives are a quick and easy way to transfer things. Gotta be careful with those too, as they can transfer malware just as well as any other storage device.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!
