They self admittedly aren't/weren't musical virtuoso's, but I always felt they were far better musicians than they were always given credit for. Ace Frehley is a very competent player and certainly influenced my playing when I first started trying to learn guitar even though John Fogerty was my primary teacher. It was always more about the visuals than musical complexity and they didn't care what the critics said. How did we get from "Thank God for Canadians !" to this? Maybe we should be talking about BTO smile

Nor I, but there are a lot worse out there. To me they sound a lot better if I don't look at them, but I'm not average by any stretch of the imagination.

The theatrical makeup was a good move. They went from being just another bar band trying to break into the big time, to actually being in the big time.

Elvis had his side burns, the Beatles had their haircuts, Alice Cooper came out cross-dressing, Madonna performed in underwear, and countless other artists/bands tried something that would make them stand out from the others.

(I think it gets more and more difficult to do something radical that get one noticed.)

A lot of other 3 chord bands have been making a lot of money, probably the most successful of all being the Rolling Stones.

Back in the early 80s we had a manager here who had the bright idea to take a bunch of guys and dress them in sports garb. The front man wore a black gi, the guitar player wore a baseball uniform, the bass player was football, the keyboard player was a race car driver and the drummer was a boxer. (And in his younger years he WAS a boxer.) They sounded okay (The baseball player, er, guitar player, was and is still a good friend.) but they looked SO STUPID on stage you figuratively couldn't hear the music over the laughter.

Gimmicks are okay to get initial attention but in the end you still have to be good. Auto-tuned girl singers with that voice that sounds like they have something stuck in their throats aside... anymore "hot" seems to trump "talented".
