I think this is a new module. I've only seen video of it, but in addition to MIDI, it is an audio interface as well. At $400, it's right there with the Ketron SD2. There are three videos of it on the Cakewalk site. Anyone have any information about it?

I think you're right; I have used the SD-20 and the SD-80 in the past but never heard of this. Will check it out. EDIT. Definitely new. Here is the info: http://www.cakewalk.com/products/hardware/default.aspx?Prod=Mobile_Studio_Canvas
That is an impressive number of patches, just about what I have on the Roland Fantom.

To get more complete and specific information about this product, download the owner's manual and the sound list that are available on the Roland site: http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/om.cfm?PRODUCT=SD-50Although I've been looking for a firm release date and/or pre-release product review(s) of this particular unit for the past couple of months now, I still haven't found that sort of information. But so it goes. And so I go.

I got my ROLAND SD-50 yesterday and I'm really happy. I was upset by my patch changes problem with the Korg 03r/w. Now my problems are gone. The SD-50 is an honest sounding machine and low latency USB audio interface.
Great unit !
Now I'm selling my Korg 03R/W ! If interested let me know !

I have one on order, it's suppose to be shipped on May 24th. Since I moved up to a laptop with Win7 i7 processor I've been looking for a midi alternative. I still use smf a lot for some things and of course the midi voices in BIAB along with RT. I haven't tried the Ketron but for the price you are getting a lot more features. Three different ways to power the device; usb, batteries, or ac. You can connect by midi or usb and it has several inputs. Its also a stand alone mp3/midi player which I like because I can use it as a back up or by itself on short gigs. Time I get it up and running you guys will be the first to know my impressions of it.

I purchased it in a local store in Quebec City. There was only 1 unit but I did talk to the salesman about the SD-50 and when he received it he did call me right now.
The only weak point about the SD-50 is that you can't use the mp3/mid player if it is connected to a computer via usb. Oh another weak point : you cannot use the phantom power of the SD-50 if it's USB powered, you have to plug the included ac adapter. But a guitar or dynamic mic will do just fine.
Contact a local dealer, maybe they can received a SD-50 before on-line stores.

So, is this GM compatible a la Ketron SD2? The advertising says:
And because the SD-50 Mobile Studio Canvas meets General MIDI 2 (GM2) format specifications, any properly formatted MIDI 1 or 0 file you load via its onboard USB port will provide properly orchestrated backing tracks as you play.
I'm new to MIDI, is that saying it is GM-compatible?
Thanks to all you early adopters out there!

Just check 3 music stores in my area these places don't carry any sound modules. A whole crap load of guitars though! No offense guitarist.

It is taking a while for the local stores to jump into the game. They have to be careful because things change so fast. I saw an ancient version of BiaB still in the package in the back area of the parents music store. Nobody is going to buy that now, unless it is at a loss. Guitars don't change quite as fast as technology. I am trying to convince them there is money to be made in this area, but they are hesitant, and justifiably so. As the interface features are added to existing products, like mixers, they will be coming aboard. They have a couple 'grand pianos' (electronic) with more connections and memory than you could imagine. The two aspects are slowly merging. For those curious, don't assume that grand piano on stage has any strings in it - http://www.kawaius.com/main_links/digital/09_dpmain.htmlI listened to a recital a couple weeks ago using one of these on stage, and was surprised when I looked into the soundboard (it does have one!) and saw speakers mounted inside .. and under.

Point well taken about the guitars and modules. The guitar center near me is still selling Tranzport.

Finally got my SD-50 a couple of days ago. I must say it fits my needs perfectly. I like the sound of it, I know sound is a very subjective thing but for me it does the job. As mentioned earlier, certain features don't work when connected to the computer. The strong point for me is using just the usb cable and getting audio and midi running through the unit as an audio interface. I can also connect my instrument mic. With the sd-50 I can leave several midi cables, mixer, audio cables, and usb midisport at home. I know there are those who like to nit pick everything and say that this device is a watered down Sonic Cell, you're right. The price is also watered down about 600 bucks, which I like. All I can say is if you are looking for a hardware module you might want to take a look at the SD-50.

I own a SonicCell and was wondering if the "mini-me" version, being the Cakewalk SD-50, was any less or better than the more expensive SC? I know from what I've read and seen (demo wise), the portability is a main selling point. The SC doesn't operate on batteries where as the SD can. Are there any other differences one should consider if the "option" exists in getting or unloading one for the other, aside from the cost, better sounds, ease of use, editing, etc.? For example, on the SC, the editing has to be done using a computer and a software program via the USB connection, verses an on-board availability....
Just another inquiring mind, Wrkinit

Bob, For a while, I sold pianos and organs, including some of the earlier generations of the Yamaha Clavinova. I was amazed then, and continue to be amazed with the current generation. We had a blind gentleman come in and sit down at one. His comment, when told it was a digital piano was that he could hardly believe it, between the feel and the sound of the instrument. I can't find it now, but there was a demo on YouTube of someone playing a new Yamaha CVP series Clavinova and playing Leroy Anderson's The Typewriter Song, and the sound was fantastic. By the way, Roland screwed up on their demo page for the SD50, something I take great amusement in. Under the audio demos, there is a demo for a 'Clavinova' where it should be a 'clavinet.' Clavinova is a trademark of Yamaha's for their line of digital pianos, and unless Roland sampled one of Yamaha's devices playing the clavinet sound, I doubt very much it's a Clavinova they're sampling. Gary
I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

I just got mine today, everything works good except I can't seem to hear the midi sounds when I open Sonar. Do I go from midi out on the SD50 to midi in on my keyboard controller? Thanks.

Does the SD-50 work as a mixer so that I can input RDs/RTs via the line-in from my laptop and mix them with SD-50 generated MIDI sounds via the line out connection to my amplifier?

Hi, with a sequencer ( I don't use sonar) it's usually under preferences or options? look for something like midi devices, Midi In option - is your Keyboard ( there should be some sort of midi driver for it), Midi Out is the sd50 . ( again there's a driver). Be interested to hear how you like the sd50. Am I mistaken, or does it also act as a soundcard for the pc? Quote:

rdem, in SONAR, go to Options, MIDI Devices, and look at Outputs. You must first check the checkbox for each MIDI instrument you want to use.
