A schoolmate from 1971 and his wife made a record in 1985 as Missing Links called "(I'm Not) Streetwise." I recently discovered the song on YOUTUBE and was inspired to write a "companion" piece. Comments are always welcome.

when many of your friends are consumed with theirs

wolves in sheeps' clothing keep me streetwise
Keep away those who like to chastise
that's not the way to become streetwise
Do not be quick to compromise
or look too good to be streetwise
Handle your business with confidence
tolerate no trifles or other nonsense
The difference 'tween bravado and arrogance
the former draws attention the latter irreverance
It will come as no surprise
when every day you're more streetwise
Attitude and skill will help you survive
long enough for you to be streetwise
Have a clear head full of common sense
Being observant is your best defense
Learning from others is convenience
nothing beats one's own experience
It should come to you as no surprise
when you discover I am streetwise
I am exactly as you surmised
I'm clever enough to be streetwise.
