Hi there,
I tried to import or open a MIDI file using RealBand which has fluctuating tempo changes throughout. For example bar 3 might be tempo 83, bar 4 84, bar 5 83 and so on but the whole track is in sytraight 4/4 time. However RealBand reads the track as 120 tempo and ignores these MidiFile tempo changes. If I open the same file it in other programs then the correct tempos are properly read. Do you know if there is a way that RealBand can recognise such tempos fluctuations? As an added query to all you experts I presume I am correct in assuming that BIAB2010 obviously cannot cope with such changes but I thought RealBand would be able to.

Tony,
There is a tempo map button in RB. I believe it looks like a metronome on the tool bar. Click that and see if all of the tempos are listed in there? The INS button there will insert a new tempo. You can also change the existing tempos which are listed there as well.
If it isn't shown in the tool bar, click the little arrows to the right (toolbar) to see what is hidden.
If that also fails, hit the help button at the top and search for tempo.

Real Band follows tempo changes just fine so I don't know what the problem is with your file and it's the same with Biab, you're assumption is incorrect.

It very well could be that the MIDi file you've found does not really have a MIDI Tempo map imbedded in it. This kind of thing is common when using free downloaded MIDI files, likely the person who created the file simply left the Tempo at 120 default and then proceeded to play a MIDI keyboard and record parts, ignoring the MIDI Tempo, bars and even the Key Signature.
This is a common problem with free downloaded MIDI files.
Sometimes you can go in there and "repair" everything tediously, sometimes not.
Sometimes it is just plain easier to go searching for another MIDI file of the same song.

Thanks everyone for your help,
My mistake I think was choosing the import file into RealBand rather than simply opening it. When I opened the file instead then the tempo changes were all there. I mistakenly imagined that importing the file into Realband would more likely also include all the tempo mapping. Anyway problem solved very simply!

Hi Bob,
Thnaks for your advice - I now discover that simply opening the midi file in RealBand (rather than importing) correctly includes all tempo changes. However I tried opening the same file in BIAB2010 and it only recognises the start tempo and remains at this tempo. Obviously I can do the BIAB stuff within RealBand but wondered how you get BIAB to recognise those tempo changes?

When I referred to Biab, I was thinking of Biab songs with tempo changes in them, not midi files. Biab will play midi files but why bother when you already have Real Band? If you want to mix Biab tracks with a midi file which I do all the time, RB gives you way more options and flexibility than Biab has. I have no idea if Biab will follow the tempo changes in a midi file or not. Apparantly not.

I do not know, sorry.
Have you tried saving it, once opened in Realband, to another .mid file with another name, and then opening that in BiaB? Maybe RB will save it in a format BiaB picks up on (?)
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I could be wrong, but I would guess that by importing, RealBand presumed that you already had an arrangement (perhaps even with tempo changes itself) that you were adding the MIDI to, so it ignores those changes on import so as not to mess up the work you've already done. Just a thought.
When you open the MIDI, that's construed as a new song, so it implements those tempo changes.
But, I'm just speculating.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
