Does anyone know if there has ever been a product out there that would have the Arbans book in audio CD format?

It would be nice to have given that I can't afford a private tutor and I'm out here in the boonies! When I was in school I took it for granted that my I had access to more directors, instructors and private tutors than one could ever want or need. Now that I WANT one I can't afford one.

It would be nice if I didn't have to post the tune to someone on a music forum for help with these. I want and NEED to make certain I'm playing them correctly. Can't imagine there's been nobody needing the same.

Thank you.

Hi Russell. Just a tip, many of us know this as "The Arban Book", or, less frequently, "Arban's Book". Try searching with those spellings. I'm not saying you will find anything, but the more common spellings might help.

This is something I had not thought about in a long time. I left this method behind in junior high. I'm quite sure I would have all kinds of trouble with it nearly 50 years later, but right or wrong, I prefer playing my own music. I don't want any possibility of falling back on some exercise as I improvise. But thank goodness, each of us plays in a different way.

Good luck in your search. If you do not find anything, I suggest you head over to the Trumpet Herald Forum and ask there. If anyone would know, it's those folks. If it doesn't exist, there are talented players who could create it. If you prefer not to join so you can post, let me know and I'll do it.

Matt,

I'm a comeback player. When I got my new trumpet this year the Arbans book was the first thing I bought. I left it behind me too ... decades ago (instruments and music up in flames in a house fire).

In high school Arbans was my Bible and I tutored with it also -- to my student's dismay. I hated it for a long time, but the player I studied under wouldn't hear of anything else and my director saw improvement, so ...

A few years ago I had an accident and since, I don't have a good memory. As for coming back on the trumpet, I want to take it slow and not rush things and so I've got lots of catching up to do and lots of material to help me. Back when I used Arbans we didn't have computer, MP3 players and recording studios in our houses. I bought a copy of Hal Leonard and I've been doing well with it. It's so nice -- I get an assessment (an unbiased one) of my studies and to me that's the greatest part of the new technology.

So, I was hoping to find something like it for Arbans. I'm actually surprised that a company like Hal Leonard hasn't jumped on that -- probably a copyright issue. For what it's worth, I was actually thinking about creating it myself -- I was kind of testing the water to see if anyone had heard of such a thing. I actually thought of doing this to cassette tape years ago -- probably good thing I didn't since the technologies' so much advanced today than it was just a few years ago.

Anyhow, thanks for replying.

Ike --

Here's a webpage of free Arban mp3's I just found by websearching for you:

http://abel.hive.no/trumpet/arban/ra/

Be advised that there can be many "interpretive" ways to play the Characteristic Studies, just as with Romantic musics, certain liberties can vary by the player.

Enjoy,

I have the Arban's Platinum Edition that comes with a piano accompaniment for the "Celebrated Fantasies" and "Airs Varies." However, I've never used that cd since I have some jazz learning cds that I enjoy far more. One thing that I've found very helpful for Arban's is "The Arban Manual" by Eric Bolvin (www.BolvinMusic.com). There are 69 lessons that cover the entire book. A typical lesson includes studies for Flexibility. Chromatics, Major Scales, Intervals, Rhythms, and songs & duets. The recommendation is to spend a week on each lesson. For me and others, this has been a great way to make through the entire book. Bolvin's "manual" is 99.9% lesson plans without a bunch of BS narrative. FWIW.

*1 to all of Eric's books. The Arban manual is great. The Jazz Trumpet book is very good for getting the technical and ear skills needed. Eric is a long time student of Claude Gordon.

There is a CD set of Clyde Hunt playing many of the exercises in the Arban book, however I don't much care for his sound and follow through. Matt does have a good suggestion about the Trumpet Herald site. Try looking for recordings of either Mark Gould or Tony Plog, you can't go wrong with either one.

Hope this helps you,
Ed
