Can you help a guitar playing father of a horn player? My son wants to play Chuck Mangionis - Feels so Good,

So I google the song, find a very nice Midi file for the horn melody. I imported into Finale and there is the melody sheet music.

Looks to be key of F (1b). Ok so far?

Here is the problem, when he saw it he indicated that several notes where "too high". Now as a Guitarist i would simply transpose down a few steps to say, Key of D (two sharps). Actuall BIAB does this nicely. But now the big question. Is this concert pitch or is this for horn??? How do I print music that a horn can play?? Or Does it not matter since he is playing along??

Jazzmandan, I have the sheet music for "Feels So Good" as we did it in our combo. Melody line, lyrics, piano, bass, and guitar chords. You are right that the concert Key is in "F" which would put the trumpet in his key of "G". We did it as written, but you could try having the trumpet play the sheet music in "F" as written and you transpose down play in Eb. If you can't find a copy let me know. Dennis

Song as recorded was in Concert F.

For Bb Trumpet, that would put him in the key of G.

Jazzmandan, you could use BIAB to keep transposing lower until you find a key where your son can handle the range of the part. Once you know the key that works for him, go one full step lower for you.

BIAB 2026 Win Audiophile. Software: Fender Studio One 8, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Fender Quantom HD8 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

This was said, but another way.

The most common transpositions for new players would be:

Guitar in C and Trumpet in D.
Guitar in F (yuck right) and Trumpet in G.

If you put the guitar in Bflat then you get trumpet in C.

So if you ask him the highest note he can play, say it's E, you have to transpose down. You might end up with notes outside the lower end, a lot of beginners have trouble with the low G and A....

The other thing of course is for him to play and play, the top notes come quick enough with practice.

jazzmandan,

Another thought ... I play both guitar and trumpet and I posed the same question when I first started using BIAB ...

You do have the option of ... First, changing to a key he's comfortable with at this time in his trumpet playing and then secondly, if there are still incidents where after changing keys, he's still playing some notes too high, use the option off the menus to Transpose Melody or Soloist Track Only (off the Melody or Soloist menu, then the Edit Melody/Soloist Track

I find that doing it this way will give your trumpet player the best of both worlds since he gets to choose his key to play along and also he can then use BIAB to take bars containing notes too low or too high and moving then up or down and octave. BIAB does this for me beautifully.

Thanks all. I think I got it, although it is a bit of a brain teaser.

It's easy if you use a piano or the piano staff at the top of the program.

You pick a note for the guitar, that what you play. Then you count up two keys on the piano.

So looking at it as C go to the black key as one (C# or Db) and then then next one which is a D. So that's 2 semi tones.

The trumpet is always going to read higher on the register, unless you go down and then you go up 2 like before and transpose down a whole octave.

Try it with numerous keys and play scales together.

Or the guitar with chords and the trumpet with notes.
