It sounds like something is using resources when you say that even typing is being delayed, I would certainly be looking at a full malware scan, Malwarebytes, your antivirus, and possibly also a run of Superantispyware, that quite often pulls stuff that others miss.

A look at Windows Task Manager would possibly be a good idea to see if the process using the resources can be spotted. Press Ctrl, Alt, and Delete this will bring up the task manager, click the processes tab, then scroll down the list, the only thing that should have a high figure is the bottom System Idle Process.
Also a look at the actual performance graph and see if processor usage is high click performance tab for that.

I've disconnected all usb devices. My firewire card is in the tower which is kinda difficult to get into. I won't bother till I get my memory stick. Meanwhile, is it safe to change the IRQ channels from the bios ? I'm confident when I go in there so there's no problems.

Since the advent of ACPI, Windows doesn't really let us change the IRQ. You will find places on the web telling how to do that, but be advised that it causes the loss of other things, such as the Windows automatic Shut Down from the Start menu. So I don't recommend doing it that way.

i recommend going inside the box and moving the card to another available PCI slot and then boot up and let ACPI reassign the IRQ, hoping you hit one where the Firewire card is all on its own IRQ. The more open PCI slots you have for this, the more chances of hitting one, as you may have to move it a time or two to find joy.

Almost certainly, this is your problem, something on the Share is likely throwing Interrupts to grab the thing -- and the soundcard's stream is the one that suffers.

Just been in the tower. Unfortunately my mb only has two pci slots. I've chaned the soundcard & the firewire card round and will try biab for a while to see if that helped. If not, I'll remove the firewire card until such time as I get another pc. I don't really use it much anyway

The problem *may* also be the chosen firewire card.

If that card doesn't have a TI chipset on it, it may not be suitable for use with audio gear.

All seems to well again. I've given it a thorough test and no more glitches. Fingers crossed. Thanks a lot for your help guys, it just shows what a great forum this is. Mac, I owe ye a jar or three. I was hoping I didn't need a new pc as I'm saving up for a new ( 2nd hand ) accordion. Gonna cost me around $3,000. Not cheap these darn things

So what seemed to fix it. Swapping the cards?

Yea we ( me ) kind of forget our old training when IRG assignment was part of the install process. This Plug&Play stuff works most of the time but as seen not all of the time.
