I have downloaded midi songs to PT from the web. I have used PT to edit some of those tracks to get them sounding the way I want. NOW, I want to download those PT tracks (midi tracks) into my MV-30 so that I can add my own "real time" keyboard parts, bass lines, etc. Problem is, when I download a song from PT to the 3.5 2DD double-density disc (which the MV-30 requires, old machine I guess) they will not load into the MV-30. Well, they'll load but the tracks and channel assignments aren't even close. So I end up with a "mess" trying to re-assign midi channels so that the alto sax part on channel 4 that came from PT in also now on channel 4 on my MV-30. Any ideas? Any help? Anyone else ever tried to do this ro even still have an MV-30 (which is a grat machine by-the-way).

There are two types of .MID files and PT can save either.
One is 'multitrack" style and is called MIDI Type 1
The other puts all channels on one track and is called MIDI Type 0
PT defaults to saving as MIDI type 1
But perhaps your device expects to see MIDI type 0 from the sound of your problem.
Try saving the file as MIDI type 0

I have a 90's era Roland synth/sampler/sequencer
It was not GM compatible so the patches were never going to line up on the same MIDI channel.
Since that synth was created in 90 there is a good chance it is not GM compatible either..
Which means that the program change numbers in PT will not match up to the same sounds in the synth.
See in GM mode the sax is in the 60's for program number (#66 for alto) - it is number 18 on MV-30 (on one chart I saw).
Two possible solutions-
load a patch map for the MV-30 so Powertracks uses that patch map (which means most mid files from internet will have same issue of patches not lining up).
Or record the MV-30 right into Powertracks inseatd of exporting to MV-30.
Since you need an external keyboard to connect to the MV-30 you could record the audio out of MV-30 into Powertracks onto the existing seq file. AND you could also send the midi thru to PT and have that in the seq file so you can just send the midi data to the MV-30 to change any sounds (and record those sounds back into PT.

Your second idea worked like a charm . . .so thanks. However, I've now decided to come into the 21st. century so I'm buying a new custom made computer just for my music. Which brings me to my next question which you may or may not be able to answer. Would you recommend Windows XP or Windows Vista for Business as my operating system? My builder said this was the most important decision I would make, especially regarding which soundcard they recommended (which I'm trying to find on-line right now)? He told me that the regular Vista had alot of bus/problems, but that the Vista Business program has performed very well. Her also said Vista would bring up a new "generation" so that I wouldn't have to upgrade as soon down the road. Main goal for me is a great soundcard that has direct midi inputs as part of it. Been reading so many complaints about "latency" problems with alot of midi to usb converters.

Well, if you want to stay 'current' get Windows 7
If you want stability get XP
As you noted, XP will become old sooner than the other choices, so for a 'new generation' approach I would suggest Windows 7 over Vista. Important to make sure your final input device is compatible with the chosen OS.
Another important decision is whether to go with 32 bit or 64 bit OS. The 64 bit versions of both Vista and Win7 have more issues with certain devices than the 32 bit OS does.
Latency doesn't generally occur because of the USB-MIDI convertor, but rather because of the device selected on the sound generating part of the midi chain. The exception in some PGMusic products currently is the EMU USB/midi input devices using XP OS. A few users have reported problems.
What do you use for midi sounds now? Just the MV 30? How does midi connect to computer currently?

I'd bet your computer is newer than that Roland.
And then you might consider getting a more current MIDI solution instead.
Check out the Ketron SD-2 Orchestral Wizard, sold on the pgmusic website.

rharv, Have been using the MV-30 sounds along with an Alesis drum machine which I daisy chain. My midi input devices when I get the new computer will be my Yamaha S-80 keyboard and the same Alesis drum machine. But then I'm sure I'll be downloading some on-line sounds like Hammond B-3, real drums, etc. I'm alittle reluctant about Windows 7 because it's still too new from what I read. Still some problems. So it's probably either the Vista or XP Pro. I play in a band that uses "backing tracks" (from mostly Power Tracks). The other member makes a living trouble shooting computers at work so he's helping guide me thru alot of this. But I've always believed the more input/opinions I get the better off I'll be.
Gotta tell ya . . .it's hard giving up almost 20 years of just midi alone. Steppin into the pc world to lay down my tracks, guitar, vocals is intimidating and so far petty frustrating. But like everything there's a learning curve.
I'll quit whining now and thanks again for any and all input you and others are giving me.

rharv and Mac . . .this is the last question I'll bug you about, promise. So in this new computer I'm having built just for music I'm going to have Windows 7 installed,e tc., etc. Only decision left is which sound card to install. I really want a card with the midi in,out, & thru built in. My builder advises me to find out what sound card(s) Microsoft used when developing Windows 7. Can you or would you please advise me on a sound card that has the midi jacks built in and "works" well with Windows 7?

From the Roland site: The sound module section of the MV-30 is not GM compatible so Standard MIDI Files may not play back properly. However, Standard MIDI Files in format 0 or 1 can still be loaded into the sequencer section of the MV-30 with the following limitations:
1. Format 0 SMFs will be loaded into track 9.
2. Format 1 SMFs will be loaded into tracks 9-16.
Note: If more than 8 tracks are present in format 1 SMFs, the additional tracks will be merged into track 16.
I know this doesn't address your problem but at least you can tell what the mv-30 is doing with the files
