Recording the playback tracks onto the new track is most often caused by the soundcard setting. This is changed in your soundcard's control panel, Recording Settings.
Tell us what kind of soundcard you are using and perhaps we can give more specific instructions, but if you going direct into the LINE iNPUT, then that's the input you need to choose rather than "What U Hear" in the example of a Creative Card, or perhaps, "Stereo Mix" if a built in soundcard like the RealTek.
