I'm making a style using 2010.5 update 303. When I write the bass lick for "What'd I Say" {C,G,Bb,C} the Bb plays like a C. It plays correctly in the edit window but in the chord or notation window it won't play the Bb, it plays C instead.

You can't write your own parts except on the solo & melody tracks. Did you know that?

I was making a style. Would someone mind duplicating the lick and see if it happens to them?

Hi When you make a style and you are inputting the music or licks you always put them in to the style maker as C so all the licks or 2 bar bits of music will play other types of chords,so if you was making a 12 bar blues it would use the C licks and play them as C,F,G so you would have not be able to input what you liked it has to be in C the only way you could do it would be to write your bass in the melody or soloist channel as these allways stay the same where the Bass,Piano,Drums Guitar and strings alter every time
regards Dave Hoskins
I always play the right notes but not always in the right order

I'm aware that you have to write parts in C when making a style. The 4 count Quarter note pattern C,G,Bb,C when played, sounds like C,G,C,C. The Bb sounds a whole step higher. I'm trying to determine with help from the forum if this is a bug in version 2010.5 patch 303

Nope. When I play the part in the style maker it's OK. Save the style and load and it plays CGCC.

JMatt, since John had different results, try doing Opt, Return to Factory Settings, just to be sure.

Matt, John had the same results I did: the lick notates and sounds right in style maker but when you save it, load and play, it plays and sounds incorrect. It plays C for Bb. When you check the bass part in the notation window it reads C,G,C,C

Contact headquarters right now before the 30 days is up. That's real bad.
Remember PG music is on the same time zone as Lost Angeles. And on Sunday it might be an hour later.
Hopefully the boss man himself will publish a note as to what is and isn't wrong.

John, I appreciate your dry humor but I had a request for this song tonight and as Murphy would have it a bug shows up. I also realized maybe no one knows this song anymore or who Ray Charles was. Who am i for that matter. Guess I can always do it the old fashioned way and just play it. See if anyone notices.

Try putting the bassline on the Melody or Soloist track and then Mute the auto-accompaniment bass part.
Until this can be figured out, that's a good workaround that would allow you to do the thing.

If you want a specific pattern played, you should use a chord mask Then the pattern plays back exactly as played, when the chord isnthe same asnthe chord mask.
In your example, the pattern played will play back without the Bb on triads, thisnis normal. If you type c7 instead of C you'll hear the pattern younwant. Or just use the chord type as above.
A similar option is to use riff based voicing. That another option, andnyou would usenit instead of a chord mask. That would leave the riff as played for all chord types.

I was going to suggest this too, but I just noticed there is no voice leading option for bass patterns, only for piano, guitar, strings. (Upgrade possibility?) Chord mask should work though.
If anyone wants to examine riff based voice leading, take a listen/look at the 8 and 4 beat 9-weighted piano patterns in the drjon styles. Way cool. (Although gotta say I've never understood how a row of 9-weighted patterns works, since 9 is supposed to "force" its pattern. Presumably the other masks impose some sort of priority hierarchy...? But what if there are multiple 9-weighted patterns each with the same other mask settings, as appears to be the case in, say, the drjon styles... is each one equally probable...?)

As you can tell not many of us make our own styles. Per Peter there's a whole lot more to it then meets the eye. and I haven't used MIDI for quite some time.

I haven't written a style for a while either but the light bulb finally came on with the mention of using a dominant 7th and using a mask. Thanks

The assumption that every time something doesn't work out as intended is leads itself to an automatic dry panned humour. Normally, in my state of musical / mathematical ignorance I would call it me, not a bug. Thus the end of the world in your case makes the assumption that the logic used for the production of a musical part is obviously flawed as you, having no such constraints on yourself, can conclude that the error must be on the part of the software.
Odd how that works.
I have one giant piece of software I wrote, started in '82 and finished it in 96. Still runs GoodLife Fitness in Canada, and the wife still babysits it. They started to replace it in 97. When they are done she retires. I should have put in a hidden expiry date but not my style.
Posting something that screams BUG BUG on a forum leads people who visit and leave to make assumptions. And most people, having not dealt with a company before, assume the worst.

Matt, why not use a midi file? It's not only the basic piano lick it's also the drums, the solo, the call and response parts and all the punches for that tune. You can certainly work up a Biab style that would sound correct but with almost any classic song you can think of available on the internet as a midi file, why bother? Coincidentally, I was messing around visiting some midi sites just last week and came upon some Ray Charles songs including that one. It's very well done. Type in "What I Say midi" or "Ray Charles midi" in Google, you should find it. If not PM me, I'll send it to you.
