This might be a stupid question, but does anyone have any knowledge of a device that would record my horn notes (say a bunch of different solos). Record them to MIDI? I don't want a MIDI file of chords, but notes themselves. Would that be a unique horn with MIDI output maybe or something I could, using my own existing horn, play into?

HI Russel

PG music has a program that will take audio single notes and convert them to midi i`m not sure what it is in, BIAB or Realband ,its there some where, have a look at patchman.com the home of the midi wind controllers as there is a midi trumpet available

regards Dave Hoskins

In cuurrent versioon of Realband it is under the audio menu item.

Record your horn to a track, then use 'Audio-Audio to Midi convert'

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I have an Akai ewi 4000s. It has a trumpet fingering setting, but you need treat the notes in a different fashion although the right hand uses the base the same as the lower octave on the trumpet, you keep the same fingering (ie 1 and 3 for D 1 and 12 for E 1 for F open for G 12 for A 2 for B etc. all the way through multiple octaves. That said it plays any patch so you could be playing a piano with the thing.

I had my practice interrupted by cancer treatments and so far my throat is too raw to resume. It's not terribly inexpensive and appears to be well made. Don't know if the store in Port Huron carries them or not. I favoured it over the Yami due to the trumpet fingering. I want the wife to learn it, so far no dice she wants to stick with the flute.

I have the less expensive AKAI USB EWI That goes for around $300 USD. IMO this is the only way to accurately (off course with lots of practice as the octave rollers throws horn players for a loop until they learn them) horn lines into midi. Any audio to midi software I’ve tried (I’ve tried many including the one that comes with PGMusic – which is as good as many I’ve tried) leaves a lot to be desired. Plan on doing a lot of editing to correct notes and to get the nuances such as vibrato, slurs, volume swells and such to achieve the almost desired results. The AKAI USB EWI records these nuances while you’re playing it. But remember that unless you have a really good sound source (the USB EWI comes with some very good sounds) you probably will not be satisfied with the end results. Things like soundfonts and most all GM sound modules do not cut it, IMHO.

I hope this helps – good luck.

There also exist a few dedicated MIDI Trumpets out there:

In no particular order:

The Morrison Digital Trumpet

Cornell University's Trumpet MIDI Controller Project

I have no firsthand experience with any of these.

Ike, you and I can also play the Piano. I have found it not all that hard to use the MIDI Keyboard Controller for recording horn parts to MIDI.

No need to transpose, either, you can set the MIDI keyboard such that its C corresponds to Concert Bb and then just play the notes as you already know them to be on the Trumpet. After recording, you can simply change the key signature if you need charts or the like.

Thanks Mac!

Ya know, I have a playing partner who has a midi keyboard and she let me take it home and tinker ... Yes it does do the trick, however ...

I haven't had an acoustic piano at my house in years and I've been playing a cheap non-midi, Yamaha PSR-190 for a time but nothing with MIDI (although my Yamaha has satisfied me as I believe that I'm my own best fan). I'll be honest with you though ... I haven't had a thing to do with MIDI until I started using BIAB (more-so lately). Seems I remember tooling around with a synthesizer once many moons ago. I've used BIAB for a few years but mostly for guitar and singing and occasional trumpeting (just doodling around ya' know).

Afterward I told my friend that I think that I must posses a music-oddity which is that when I'm playing trumpet my improvisations turn out so much more "jazzy" and embellished -- so much so that I'd like to have them in sheet-music form -- My nephews whom I tutor like them and would like to play them as I do and thus, my asking the question about this MIDI recording thing. Take the same situation though (my playing her MIDI keyboard), and my trumpet compositions come out sort of flat and uninteresting to me. Almost like they've been written by two different persons. I was basically taking my piano-created MIDI trumpet composition and then using BIAB Editable Notation Mode to jazz things up to my liking.

I dunno ... I'm thinking that one side of my brain is piano and the other is trumpet! The wife says they are neither -- they are something else entirely. She didn't say what though.

I *record* my Trumpet solo examples to .wav file first.

Then I use that as my guide to transcription.

There are certain Yamaha MIDI keyboards that have a "Breath Control" input on them. Purchasing the little and inexpensive Breath Controller "mouthpiece" is a great addition that allows natural breath control over the envelope of each note played on the keyboard.

There are other methods, too.

If you have the $$$ available, look into a program called, "Melodyne".

Do a websearch for the Melodyne website and watch some of the videos there. This program can change a .wav file of your trumpet playing into MIDI instantaneously. A marvel.
