This doesn't work for me. I get a message saying 'didn't retreive any midi data from the clip board'. I'm not using any midi files at all within this project, if that makes a difference. It's all RT's and I did just what you said to do, and nada. Oh well. I think this chart is gonna remain locked in RB. When all else fails, I guess I have to re-write the darn thing in Biab.

Shockwave,

UPDATE

Audio tracks must be saved as an seq file and that could be why BB won't import the file.
Maybe you could make a dummy midi file with just 1 midi track with the appropriate chords?

Percy

Percy,
You have a good thing going. don't mess it up by trying to work around one person's issue. My songs do not have any midi and the copy chords works perfectly. Dan is just doing something wrong. Give him a chance to play around first.

When you hit copy, what choices do you have selected with the copy? I have chords and markers selected. Events was selected by default but I unchecked that one. At first I had events selected but RB hung with that one. This song is a long one at 250 measures and RB chocked on it, obviously. So, what do you guys have checked for copy?

Percy, thanks at least for the suggestions. While I understand the 'it works for me so tough for you' attitude, it's nice when someone at least tries to lend a hand. I'll try your extra suggestion but I think it may have something to do copy choices.

Shockwave,

Since this morning, I too have been having problems with the copying. I indeed was able to copy an all Realtracks seq file like John; but I was also getting the same response you mentioned this morning. I tried to isolate different factors but came up with nothing conclusive.

I just copied an seq file with Realtracks and again it worked perfectly.

So when I do the control c in RB, I checkmark- events, chords and part markers, albeit the file really has no midi events.

One issue I did have this morning- I had all kinds of difficulty with endings as well as with tags in the mgu file I was working on. So when I tried to copy to that file from RB, it could already have been somewhat compromised. A number of PG users state that they do the framing and such of the song in BB and then do a majority of the work in RB. I like the idea of bouncing between the 2 programs but each has its strengths and I just need to figure out the best work flow for my needs.

Here's what I would suggest-

Create an seq test file with just a few Realtracks and see if you can at least import them into a new BB file.

Lotsa luck.

Dan,
That is not my attitude at all. Percy posted a method. I tried it on a song with all RTs. All my songs are all RTs. It worked perfectly as Percy said. You tried it and it didn't work. All I meant was before you go mucking the waters by trying other stuff make sure it's being done exactly right. Give til tommorrow morning and I'll post a step by step.

2. Highlite the chords on the RB chord sheet.
3. hit the copy icon
4. check, chords,events,markers
5. hit OK and WAIT
6. bring BIAB forward
7. file/open special/import chords from PG Music MIDI file on CLIPBOARD

Works time and time again.

That IS good to know John. My question is- what exactly is events? This one has stalled me before when copying in biab. I take it to mean the actual audio 'file-string' too, but that's a guess. Like I said, my very long song chocked RB when choosing events but to be fair, I bailed on it before letting it do it's thing. I'll try waiting it out but it looks like it could be a VERY long time to process. I gave it upwards of five minutes and it hadn't completed yet. We're talking COPYING here! That's ridiculously long. When I unchecked events, the process went fairly quickly but it didn't work in the end.

I will avoid this scenario in the future. Like Percy mentioned and I will do too, the chart will be fully completed in biab before moving over to RB. But still, this is a great thing to have working, but I haven't had success yet. I'll let ya'll know...

Dan, events are midi things like notes, CC's and program changes, panning, stuff like that. Also, keep in mind Biab has a 255 bar limit. Can't go over that no matter how many hoops we've all tried to jump through. That's one major reason to set up a song in RB, if it's a really long song you have no choice.
John, I'm curious do all those events and especially the part markers actually work after copying into Biab? I haven't had a chance to try it myself but I'm thinking they don't, all you're getting are the chords as a visual, that's it. Do the part markers actually trigger the substyle or a drum fill?

Events MUST be checked. Why it needs the audio events ............but it does.
All the process does is the chords.

Ok, I'll try again tomorrow night. But all that time just to copy something is beyond crazy. But I'll try again.

I have successfully saved an all RT song as midi then opened the midi file in BIAB and the chords were there. I have read comments saying it doesn't work for all RT songs, so maybe I had MIDI somewhere in the project without knowing it.

In that case, here is a quick way to add a MIDI track to an all-RT song so it can be exported as MIDI:

1) audition your styles in BIAB to find one that has strings with sustained chords (many string styles play the chords). Write down the name of the style if you are as forgetful as I am.

2) open your RB project

3) use the style picker to make the style you just found the active style

4) right click on an empty track, and make sure that track type = MIDI

5) right click on the track again and pick SELECT WHOLE TRACK (or CTRL-A)

6) at top of program, click the [GENERATE] button

7) from the dropdown menu, pick GENERATE MIDI TRACK

8) from the next dropdown menu pick STRINGS

the chords will then be added to a midi track. Then when you SAVE AS MIDI, the chords will be saved in the file in such a way that BIAB can retrieve them when you OPEN MIDI FILE

This is also a good way to add chords to an all RT song for use with a vocal processor. I've created a style with nothing but one sustained chord part and named it VOCALIST so I don't have to search for a good style with sustained chords every time.

I know it's not as difficult actually doing that as it is to write it, but it seems like a bit of tooling around to do something that I would hope they make easier in an update. I think of the chord chart as nothing more than chords on a piece of paper. Either prgram should be able to open up that piece of paper- as simple as that. Then if you want that chord chart to execute changes within the realtracks or midi you have assigned, you generate, or regenerate. Maybe if they made the chord chart saveable as it's own file recognized by either program, such as a CC file [chord chart]. I'm working on another song and again I find myself in the position of wishing to open the chord chart in either program as it progresses, and I can't. At least, I can't unless I stick midi somewhere in there, which I don't prefer to do.

A piece of paper with chords on it. A simple CC file. That's all.

The Realtracks that open in BB with an underscore under the green trackname do have MIDI file associated with them in order to produce music notation.

Likely those are the files that have the data you want in them.

But many of the older Realtracks don't have that data associated with them and thus there likely can't be a MIDI file associated for that track.

There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
