Last night I finally D&D'd my RB tracks over to reaper. There were a number of clicks and pops imbedded in the files in spots- always on the 1's, like it got screwy right on the 1's sometimes. It happened mostly on my RT bass, e-piano, and to a lesser extent, the RD's. One bar of e-piano actually was out of time in one spot. Also, some tenor sax dragged over and got wobbly and nasty sounding in spots. Because reaper is such a powerful editor, I was able to make quick work of getting rid of those glitchy spots, as well as swap out and around lots of phrases that generated on the RT's to begin with that I didn't quite like.

But the bottom line is, something gets screwy with drag and drop. Whoever is in a position to try it should do so, just to confirm it's only my issue or something more.

**Clicks and Pops that occur with the beginnings of specific notes or sounds may be due to the track CLIPPING at those points because it is too loud. Lower the volume of the tracks and check the VU meters accordingly. Anything that hits or exceeds 0dB mark may be doing this.

**Sometimes these artifacts can only *seem* to be happening "on the one" or whatever and there is really just the random clicks and pops of streaming audio when the disk is in need of defragmenting or there are Interrupts to your sound device (check IRQ table) or perhaps the use of ASIO sound driver that is set too low in the buffers.

Clipping is not the issue, for sure, no doubt. I know how to manage gain staging Mac. In fact by default, RT volumes are plenty conservative enough. And within my daw, I know how to gain stage properly. That's a novice issue and for the record, I'm not a novice. No offense taken.



The instruments sound fine in RB and those tracks are essentially frozen. When they are dropped into reaper, they pick up random clicks on the ONES in spots. I know the difference between random and on the ones. This is on the ones. I have dealt with it through automation. What I can't deal with is some RT's coming out garbled when dropped into my daw. That one has to be dealt with at the source. What I will try next is two things- consolidate file and/or render to wav file instead of dropping into reaper. This should confirm if anything is wacky with drag and drop.

Is Reaper set to 16/44.1 same as the BiaB wav files?

I swore I posted this yesterday, but- yes, the rates are the same. I setup the daw project with all the same basic settings as RB.

After taking a look at this I have found out some things. First, the garbled track is a dreamy guitar specifically. It's spotty within the whole track, but still usable. That happened because the dreamy guitar didn't like the time stretch and got wacky- essentially, normal behavior. I was asking a tempo of 65 for the dreamy guitar to work at 90- a tough one for that style of playing for that guitar. I'm actually glad a lot is still usable because I like the dreamy guitars. I'll keep them in mind for slower tunes. Second thing is that I regenerated the other tracks that picked up some pops on the ones and they sounded better. I think there is still some work to be done on the software side to get things smoother when piecing together a RT performance during generate. But it's also just a matter of tempos too and the user has to plan a bit when making that first initial choice of song tempo, when it comes to RT's. Not everything is gonna work well at different tempos, even considering double/half time options. Some things just won't work well. So, consider what instruments you want to use and how many of them have a good array of tempos and choose accordingly.

For all that is going on in the software to juggle the demands of the user, I'd say it's all remarkably powerful. The software can still benefit with fine tuning of things, and the user can benefit with a full understanding of how best to coax what they want out of the software. But I must say, for all the little wranglings, either on my end or just the software, it's fun, interesting, challenging, and bottom line- it's sounds pretty freakin amazing. I'll post this song in another thread so ya'll can hear it. It's got my toes tappin! LOL!

I had warbles with Dreamy guitar ay anything to far above 65 Bpm, but there is a dreamy guitar at 85 and 120 i beleive as well.

Don't forget you can now use half/double time.
In Dan's above example he should have used the 190 and set it to double time.
This is sort of a tough concept to crasp.
Here's how I remember.
If the RT you want to use is double the tempo of the song you choose double time in the drop down.
BTW the 190 at DT sounds nice at a tempo of 90.

Not to appear to argue, but for clarity, would not 90 be more like half time of 190 not double time?

No need to argue with me. If you don't like it argue with Peter but before posting a comment that may confuse please read the book.
From the book:
Double time and half-time support for RealTracks added. Now you can play any RealTracks at half-time or double time. This allows you, for example, in a ballad at a tempo of 70, to add a RealTracks Sax solo with a tempo of 140, and play it as a double time, which will match the ballad tempo of 70. So now all of your existing RealTracks can be used at 3 different tempos (normal, half-time, double time).

Well now that I've been a little snappy let me explain how it works.
If you choose a RT that is 140 BPM and stick it in a song that is 130 or 150 BPM the RT will stretch or compress to fit the BPM BUT will play the complete phrase in one measure as it would at 140BPM. If you take a RT at 140BPM and utilize the double time feature and use it on a song at 70BPM there is NO stretching or compressing going on. Instead the phrase is laid out over the course of TWO measures thus it takes DOUBLE THE TIME TO PLAY the phrase that was intended to play over ONE measure.
Make any sense?

Makes sense, but I find the best way to really know is obviously try the settings out and listen. I think I was wrong about the tempo of my dreamy guitar. I believe I used 85, not 65. I figured 85 was close enough to 90, which for most all instruments is fine- but not the dreamy guitar. I toyed with the different tempos of that guitar, double timed and half timed, and that's how I found out that this guitar doesn't take well to stretching or compressing in the least. It's either because of the nature of the playing, which is sustained multi-note chords, or a software problem with that guitar. I'm guessing it's just the nature of the guitar. But other instruments, such as acoustic piano and and e-piano do fine when stretched and they are of the same nature. Weird, but the dreamy guitars are very unforgiving when stretched. Anyone interested should try these guitars at different tempos and see how well the generate. It could rule out a software problem. The biggest killer is I could just pick up my damn guitar and play a dreamy track just fine, and a whole lot better! But, I want the software to do the work if it can. That's why I bought in- to save me some work. In general, I'm also noticing that slower tempo instruments behave better to speeding up than faster instruments slowed down, no matter which options you choose. So that initial choice- song tempo- has pretty significant consequences all the way down the line in a project. Choose carefully right from the start, I'm learning.

Absolutely on the speed up. That's why I always choose an Inst that's at a slower tempo to speed up. I play bass and always do my own.

I brought my Dreamy 85 up to 130 and it sounded the same guality wise. Of course at that speed it wasn't quite that dreamy sound but it sounded fine.This was solo BTW

Snippy little John! LOL, just kidding old man, but i understand your explaination. If you think about it though, it does make sense the other way. Just to the casual view the terms double time would mean to double the tempo, and half time to half the tempo. But as you explained, it means to spread it over double the measures or half the measures.

I also find dreamy guitars to be the least forgiving, but i hve gotten it to stretch a little bit maybe 10 BPM or more and sound okay.

I was only kidding also. When this feature first came out in Beta I reported it as an error. I also thought it was backwards. That's how I came to have it explained to me. Made sense.Kinda!
