They say that the problem with Atlanta (nice town, really) is that, when you leave it, you're in Georgia.

It's beginning to subside, but still. I'd settle for Georgia entering the 20th century. Not asking for the 21st.

Imagine Canada Dry eh? Wow. Not likely. Maybe somewhere.

Rye and Canada Dry, and Clamato Juice and Vodka with Celery Salt and Worchest-tis-dis-here sauce. Yer national beverages along with beers.

PS won't say good luck, just advise to setup, try it out, and be as redundant as you can.

Tones,
congratulations on the icebreaker gig! I predict that you will make a favorable impression, become a regular, and get more gigs at other places.

Thanks all. Yes the temperance is wide spread. As Richard said once you leave Atlanta or Asheville,NC for that matter. In the County I live in just one City is wet the rest of the County is dry.
I'm just hoping that I like playing out alone. At 60 dragging the gear in and out of the house to the club and back again may overshadow the fun of playing. We'll see. That's what this gig is all about.

OK so I played the gig. First off the purpose here was:
1. To see if I would like playing alone---I didn't 20 years ago do to inferior technology at the time & less experience.
2. To see how Real Band sounded in a live environment.
3. Get the willies out so i could play
I LOVED doing the show, Real Band sounded, well like a Real Band. The management liked what I did and said I sounded real good. They gave me a $50 tip. As far as the nervous factor: well I guess 45 years of playing and being 60 once you land at the gig it's sort of old hat.
Now for I'll call it the negative part.
This place is located just over the boarder from NC into TN. This is rural country and at this time do to the recession some of the poorest areas. There was only about 20 people and they were all guys. No women except the bartender who is the owners daughter. In talking with these guys some really like what I do ( old Country ) and some would prefer Southern Rock, Country Rock & some Country. They want it loud and driving. This group of guys there I'm sure is representative of what else would come and I'll tell you it has the potential to be very volatile. Add women to this and it would be explosive. The busiest part of the whole place was the drive up beer window were you can buy beer by the six/twelve pack. They buy a twelve pack drink that and then come into the club. This was told to me by the bar tender. Very hard drinking, hard partying crowd. When I was playing I was watching these guys and they reminded me of a pact of wild coyotes jumping and biting each other in play however one wrong bite and you have a brawl. I won't go back there again but it served it's purpose.

Good to hear that you got over the first hump and that the musical end of it worked well.

That deserves a comment, but it has left me speechless.

I did get a little chuckle moment however. When I spoke to the owner I told her that I use a computer for my backing tracks and that I use real players that I've paid for to do the parts. So last night she says to me " it really sounds good and I can't get over the fact that you sound like a real band." I never let on.

There can be benefits to a dry county, Glad it went great. Your story reminds me of the scene in the Blues Bro movie at the red neck bar. you just have to have a version of "Rawhide" on the cd and you're good to go.

Silvey. how close to the coast are you?
that is the trick, there are tons of little touristy places along any coast that love a one man band to keep the folks there a bit longer. The place I mentioned the other day i went to and they ahd a guy playing there, also had another dude there saturday night. He was not quite as good as the last monday guy, but there was still arount 20 folks there eating and enjoying. He played a accoustic, with a Ipod backing track setup, and a Digitech vocalist 4 setup. Mellow easy vacation crowd. Same would be true in a mountain resort area.

Hey John, just bring along a chicken wire cage, you'll be fine....

I haven't been through the rural South since the 70's but I remember stopping at a few places like that usually in the middle of the day just to check things out on the way to one of our big hotel gigs in Florida or wherever and man, it's a different world that's for sure. The locals were not too impressed with a bunch of long haired musicians from LA either, we'd just grab a burger and be gone asap.
I could be watching a movie with some friends when I got home and there would be a scene in a bar like that with all the usual Hollywood cliche people and I would tell them yeah, that's about the way it really is and it sounds like it's still the way it is. Gun racks and nobody's too concerned about drinking and driving.
One word: "Deliverance"
I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a place like that at midnight on a Saturday. You kiddin me?
I really hope for your sake you can find a decent venue.

It seems ironic to me that Dave Miller is playing country music in the UK, but you live on the intersection of 3 states where country music originated, and you have trouble finding a venue! What's wrong with this picture?

Based on discussions with NC natives: if you are in the mountains, and the counties around you are dry, that almost certainly means there is an active moonshine culture at work. In fact they may be the reason why the counties are dry. (it gives them a monopoly)

Maybe you could get gigs at the police department playing for the inmates. A lot of them are probably there for controlled substance violations. At least from behind bars they can't throw your equipment through a window or remove any of your teeth at high velocity.

Good to hear the show went well! Must feel pretty good to be back on stage.

A wise man once wrote "celebrate the difference" but......A flippin' DRIVE up BEER window????
That's two words in one sentence that definatly don't belong together.

I passed through the south in the 70's as a longhair and got the same treatment. However, that was before Lynyrd Skynyrd. These days there are more long-haired rebels than any other kind. And if they ever ask "you ain't from around here, are ya...?" that sends the same basic signal a rattlesnake sends when it rattles. Time to back away slowly.

Skynyrd is probably the main reason these guys want to hear southern rock. It is unapologetic, pro-south in-your-face rebel music. Skynyrd's reply to Neil Young's SOUTHERN MAN says it all: "A Southern Man don't need you around anyhow..."
