The Tracks View can show both Audio and MIDI data:
The Audio Edit window allows 'Automation' curves to be drawn for both Audio and MIDI data, however, it only displays tracks with Audio. The actual MIDI data is not displayed.
It would be an improvement if the actual MIDI data was also shown with the automation lines in the Audio Edit windows, similar to the Tracks View display.

In principle I agree but in practice I'm not sure.
Looking at the screen shots above are you sure the bar beat timeline across the top of the Audio Edit window is granular enough for a user to accurately volume automate high density midi like you might see on a drum or piano track?

The timeline can be zoomed in / out with the mouse-wheel to any level. Is that the granularity that is the concern?
The actual issue is that for MIDI, the volume automation works (thanks Charlie), but the MIDI data is not displayed (like it is in the Tracks View window):

+1 for displaying midi data in the Audio Editor window when performing volume automation. Yep, the zoom feature was what I was thinking about. Thanks AudioTrack.
Even if track midi data is displayed I'm guessing in practice there may be more hurdles that users would encounter before finding that setting midi volume automation in the Audio Editor window is practical. But this request is a step in the right direction.
I'm thinking PG Music likely was not aware midi volume automation can be set in the Audio Editor window until Charlie pointed it out.
I've been proven wrong many times and likely will be proven wrong in the future so there is every possibility I'm wrong. Either way, I doubt if my thought is important enough for a PG Music staff member to comment so we will likely not know for sure.
Your illustration using Master Track automation makes sense because I believe the Master Track output is audio, not midi data. Midi data is first routed to the audio mixer where each track has synths and effects and then to the Master Track audio output.
All of that is guess work because PG Music has not published Band-in-a-Box audio and midi data signal flow diagrams.
I support the automation display improvement for volume automation in the Audio Edit Window for midi but suggest that rather than a display of the block midi data similar to Tracks View display, it will be more of an improvement to display what the midi render waveform will be.
As shown in Audio Track's Tracks View screen shot, the midi data blocks cover the entire track from top to bottom without any indication of volume data. In contrast, the guitar RealTrack in the Tracks View is centered in the track and there's +6db of headroom above the waveform and -6db below allowing precise volume automation in the screen shot. Automation can extend beyond these visible limits and the screen will adjust the display.
In BIAB, it's best to automate midi velocity in the Piano Roll.
Some may be unaware, but visible volume automation of midi as a waveform of how the render will appear and a visible Master Mix waveform already exist in the BIAB Audio Edit Window as an advance feature for all individual tracks except the Thru Track. Any audio edit feature can be used on midi tracks with a visible waveform.
I've attached screen shots to display how visible midi volume automation looks and how a visible volume automated Master Mix appear in the Audio Edit Window. Note the db scale is available for precise volume automation in the visible midi track.
i feel respectfully audio edit view should not be arouind anymore. its major flaw is one cant see ones edits correlated with other tracks. i would far prefer to see all edits done in tracks view (eg like rb and other daws.) and for various automation tasks each track in bb tracks view has an assocaited automation lane. this way everything is visible.
but i'm sure some will disagree. i just find aedit view difficult for me. in reaps or rb for example i can see everything in one view.
happiness.

my songs....mixed for good earbuds...(fyi..my vocs on all songs..) https://soundcloud.com/alfsongs (90 songs created useing bb/rb) (lots of tips of mine in pg tips forum.)

Well, this wish topic is for improving the Audio Edit Window display, not eliminate the feature. There's no shame in doing your editing in Reaper or RealBand. They both are designed to work just the way you like. Lot's of folks do it that way.
