With standard Windows 7 sound I could:
1. Output sound from BIAB, Audacity, etc. 2. Input sound from a stereo {tape, cd, turntable, another system). 3. Input midi using a Yamaha midi-usb device
The only problem being that, due to the latency of the Microsoft synth wave table, it was very difficult to input a melody line to BIAB. ( It was much easier if you slowed down the tempo.)
I had some problems with sound on Widows 7. To me, it seemed like the solution would be to add a sound card. (No problems on XP.)
So I tried my old XP sound cards Soundblaster, Xtreme, Turtle Island, but they would not work under Windows 7. Of course there are drivers for each of these, but I couldn't get them to work. So, I posted the problem on the BIAB forum. I very quickly got two answers. The first said that Audiophile 192 was the answer and the second agreed with the first. So I spent the big bucks for the Audiophile 192. Of course I had to go online for a Windows 7 driver. It took me all day to finish (I thought) the installation. In summary, I could now (1) output sound (3) input midi directly without the Yamaha midi-usb device but (2) I could not input sound. Actually, I could see the sound in the M-Audio control board but it wouldn't reach Audicity. In the online help I found the following:
": Why is there no Record what you hear function with M-Audio hardware?
:The feature to Record what you hear is done with the use of the Windows kernel mixer. M-Audio device drivers bypass the Windows kernel mixer in order to maintain the integrity of the audio and reduce latency. Because the Windows kernel mixer is bypassed, there can be no "Record what you hear" feature.
As an alternative, you can use software to perform the same function as Record what you hear.Virtual Audio Cable and Audio Hijack (Mac) are examples of such software."
So, I downloaded the VAC application, which has a free trial period. This program required an additional application (I forget the name).
At this point I had enough. It would be difficult to return the Audiophile soundboard (online order) so I'm repacking it and putting it on the shelf. I'll just eat the 120$. I'm going to use the Windows 7 sound as is. When I want to enter a melody to a song by midi, I'll slow the tempo and use the Yamaha midi-usb interface. This project has consumed days of my time for nothing. For any more attempts at using a soundboard, I'll wait until Windows 7 support appears on the box before I purchase it.

Jeeze, sorry to hear your having so much trouble. I use that MAudio Card on a Win7 machine with no similar problems. Do you have a tech savory buddy who can come by to help install? The only thing you state which I think I can confirm is the "..no Record what you hear feature". Oh my, there are several ways to get around this. If you are interested I could elaborate. Seems you are giving up too early, but that is your decision. Honestly, when I install new hardward I am disappointed when it all goes well immediately. I tend to like to fiddle with things to get them to work.

That should have been Tech-Savvy

On most delta cards this can be accomplished via the mixer/routing panel of the delta itself. It is a matter of routing the sound to the input, or recording the main output that you are listening too.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

To JazzManDan:
I would like to learn more about getting input all the way through that soundcard. The only way mentioned in the online FAQ was the software (Idon't know the cost). I'm against spending any more time or money on the project.
To RHARV:
I could see the input registering in the mdule mixer meters, but nothing would come through.

Any more thoughts?

Well I don't think you should need to spend any more money but looks like it will take time.

First things first... What Driver have you installed? Have you installed this driver?

The M-Audio Delta series calls this, "Direct Monitoring".

You should have Direct Monitoring turned ON when you want to record a digital stream on the turnaround inside the soundcard.

To Mac:
In the control panel there is an entry "Disable asio direct monitoring". I've tried it with the block checked and unchecked and neither way allows the input to get to Audicity. I can see the input on the control board input meters. (At the same time it appears on the output meters.) I'm using 1/2 in. I've also tried the spdif in. No success, but the manual says you need special cables for that. On the computer and all the other soundcards I've used, Line In does the job. Why can't the Audophile card handle that?

I think Audacity does not use ASIO drivers. It shoyuld default to the WDM windows drivvers. The meters inside Audacity will tell you if a signal is getting to the program or not. The lefthand side meters. There is also a critical Volume Control for R3ecording in Audacity, the slider with the little mic icon. If that's turned all the way down, no recording can happen as well.

Line Input should be recognized, sorry I don't have your OS for a more detailed description or step by step.

S/PDIF should only be used with a *digital* signal.

1/2 in should be the ones for the Line Input, though.

When you can't get a card to record with program A, try another recording program of any kind, if for no other reason than to rule the soundcard out as being okay for work.

To record in Audacity from M-Audio Card:
1) Open M-Audio Delta Control Panel
2) Set output on "1/2 out" to "1/2 in"
3) Your 1/4 inputs should now be heard through you monitors
4) Record in Audacity

To hear playback from Audacity
1) Open M-Audio Delta Control Panel
2) Set output on "1/2 out" to "sw rtn"
3) Play in Audacity

Thats how it works here. By the way, multitrack recording and play work much better using Reaper, where no such adjustments are needed.

That does seem to be the proper driver (same one I have installed). Funny though, I had not visited the M-Audio users forum in some time. Having gone there today to verify this driver I saw a lot of angry people regarding Win7 drivers. don't understand the fuss since this driver works well for my recording needs. Perhaps, there is stuff which I simply don't use and therefore don't know that it don't work?

Well i did some study of this and like so many other "puter" things, it all comes down to configuration. But remember I told you that this is what I like so maybe that is why this card is working so well for me. Turns out that much of the fuss is about the lack of flexibility of the M-Audio control Panel - seems much less routing options then in previous, XP versions of the applications.

Here is a discussion that you should appreciate:

http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?16818-Audiophile-192-both-1-2-in-and-sw-rtn-to-output

By the way my monitors are attached to the "Main Outs" and not the "Monitor Outs" for all my recording.

I also have a Sampson C-Control - Control Room Matrix which allows me to mix and match multiple outputs from my computer. With this I can run, mix and match (without rewiring) my internal SoundCard, as well as the monitors or mains of the M-Audio just with the push of a button. But this is not necessary for the current discussion.

Good Luck, it is a great card (no audible latency when recording) when it is configured correctly and when it is doing the things you need it to do.

I tried setting output on "1/out" to "1/2in". Still nothing to Audacity. I looked at the link to "information" which seemed to be more about "what you hear" which is different from a simple line in. I thought I would take a look at Reaper just to see what it's like. I downloaded Reaper and chose the evaluation option. I executed Reaper and a Screen appeared that was in no way obvious to me how to do what I needed. I downloaded the users manual, discovered it was 418 pages long, and printed out pages 21-24 and 61-65. I sure didn't need all that function, and still wasn't sure Reaper was what I needed for a simple line in function.
So, Audophile is back in the box on the shelf for good. It has taken way too much time just to reduce the latency on midi in to BIAB. Thanks for all the effort with my problem. Bye for now.

Well you said you didn't want to spend a lot of time and I guess you ment it. Your not a glutton for punishment let some of the rest of us. I am convinced that we have not exhausted all our chances at getting this up and running for you, but that's your decision. I do admit, after visiting the M-Aduio forum, that there are some issues associated with the Win7 compatibility. I will have to temper my endorsements in the future.
