Hi Guys,

I am sure many of you can anwer this. I would love to know the logistics behind creating Real Drums and Real Tracks. When PG Music hires musicians, do they play in every style in every key? This seems like a huge task. It would really be interesting to understand how this is done. It also would be great, if PGMusic would post a video on a recording session.

Thanks
Gadi

I doubt they will show the world how they do this, but what we do know is that it is a short 3 to 5 minute wave file of a studio session, like a strumming guitar for instance. That is most likely played in several keys or chord runs, then when you generate it the program chops it up and rebuilds according to the chord needed, and the bar marker settings.

For this matter RDs are a little different since it just takes. the A parts or B parts plus rolls, fills, flams and such. I would imagine that solos and more difficult tracks take more effort.

Very interesting process, and very cool for us.

It's a good question. Although I know some of what happens, I am reluctant to post it here. PG Music has a proprietary process to make these Real Drums and Real Tracks and we should let them keep their market advantage and do everything we can to encourage them to keep on developing.

I suggest you post in the Wishlist forum. PG Music reads these requests, and if they feel it's a good idea to release their info or make a video, they can do it.

Gadi, take a look in your RealTracks folders.

You will find .wma (or .wav in the case of Audiophile edition) tracks for each RealInstrument you have.

Note that there are typically THREE identical tracks but in different keys. These keys are typically arrayed as a diminished triad, or to put it in another fashion, they will be stacked a minor third apart from each other.

BiaB intelligently picks the one needed to fit the key you have designated for your songfile and then uses pitch stretching algorithms to put it into the exact key desired. If, of course, the key you happen to pick is the same as the key of one of those three root files, no stretch would be needed.

Three files of identical playing with the key signature of each spaced as to a diminished triad yields enough spread to always have one of those keys "in reach" of the stretch algorithm. This prevents having to make the algorithm stretch the key too far, at which point digital artifacts and other undesirable things that are detrimental to the fidelity occur.

You can play back any of the "root" RealTracks files using a media player like the Windows Media Player. Worthwhile to do this, as it opens up to you what's going on a bit better.

Hi Gadi,

You can be sure there is fascinating world "Behind the Scenes" . I worked with some names in the sampling and software market, like Scarbee, Overloud and others, now with PGMusic as Spanish forum host I discovered RealTracks and RealDrums. As Matt rightly states, each maker have proprietary process to develop its products. One of them I mentioned, Thomas Scarbye from Scarbee is a restless and imaginative developer of his own sampler libraries, I know Thomas work since 2000 y. aprox. We were working toghether in a Jazz guitar sampler library, we stop it because marketing and feasibility facts at that time, I think he makes the best Bass Guitar sampler libraries today, recently him got a well deserved deal with Native Instrument for all his bass libraries. Nowadays I am in the demo and beta test team for Overloud TH1 and VKFX with Thomas Seraffini, who is the original creator of IKM SampleTank and Amplitube. The point is I am participant witness of the work carried out, I know the work very well, there are countless hours, days and months of hard work, even years! to make a big sampler library, from the recording of raw instruments takes to demanding audio quality control implied, without forget the careful marketing, too many production details to enum here shortly.
I know little about how PG Music does, but definitely RealTracks/RD took my sense of wonder beyond limits, so hard to even imagine such work level behind it, the planning and management of recording sessions with amazing musicians, each different personalities, despite they are seasoned pro artist, used to record in studio, we should note that they must be emotionally at the right time to record all that RealTRacks able to convey those same emotions to final BIAB user. Also consider thousands of studio hours into edition and the steady software design to maintain a amazing unique algorithm working the way we know. Of course PGMusic should keep their procedures as a trade secret. Maybe in the future PGMusic could license or commercialize the patent to others, to allow third parties developers to create RT/RD for Band in a Box and RealBand, that could expand the market horizons in a similar way as Kontakt, Halion, Cubase VSTi and others standardize today, but I conjecture that is not so probable by now, I think already they have too much work pending in this RT/RD emergence times. In the meantime I stay calmdown ...recording my dreams with BIAB, RB plus RT/RD....by the way, I must to leave now, there is Eric (Marienthal) waiting in my studio, I have to confess I notice him less impatient since he lives in his own RealTracks in my BIAB

Okay, that opened my head right up. The possibilities boggle the mind.

I'm sure that given the chance to access the proprietary information, that entrepreneurs would jump in and offer new real track and drums but I'm also betting they would be offered at fairly high prices compared to PG Music. One thing that has truely boggled my mind over the time that I have been doing business with PG Music is the amount of value you get for so little money. I keep upgrading the Audiophile product for under 300 dollars each time new styles and real tracks come out and I'm just floored that Peter and his company can sell at that price, considering that a large part of the price is a 1.5 TB harddrive and case. I compare that to what I have paid for Acid loop packages that give me far less in the way of usable music and require far more effort on my part to get to a finished piece of music.

I'm am less anticipating what could happen if Peter licensesed his Real Track/Real Drum Technology and more waiting excitedly for what new Real Tracks will come out at Christmas from PG. I already have my audiophile upgrade in my December budget.

I was thinking in terms of things that PG hasn't addressed in Real Tracks, and doesn't seem likely to. Things that might resemble Acid loops--nontraditional percussion, synths, ambient sounds, things that I haven't even thought of--with functionality in BIAB and RB.

That is cool Keith, indeed I am with you, Santa already has my letter from July I swear him I'm a good kid, I wolf down my oats and take a bath every day to deserve my gift.
Only just a little remark, I wrote "Maybe in the future" It can't be more clear. With some exceptions of course, a well managed entrepreneurial business promises great benefits to everyone, I can't imagine Steinberg owning exclusively its propietary VST technology and making every new plugin by themselves. In the market of virtual intruments and plugins the shop's offer is wide, from the free (some VERY good ones!) to absurdly expensive, at end you will be free of pay what you want or can afford. I just can't stop dreaming, I imagine in not so far future new RealTracks and RealDrums based in the rich world music and instruments out there: Flamenco, Gipsy, India, Arabian, Joropo, Vallenato, Celta music, Candombe and many more. For example, lot of actual World Music blend a mixture of Western and Eastern Influence, Rock and Roll, Hip Hop, and Pop music, blend of primitive, European, and American cultures, there is a myriad of uncharted possibilities probably and it is very possible PGMusic thinks about it, however it would be easier to share the workload. One day 20 years ago, a pioneer named Peter Ganon, fulfilled his dream to make life easier for musicians, and many including myself discovered Band-in-a-Box and immediately we take advantage of its potential. Peter and family/team don't rested on laurels, they kept anticipating BiaB immense possibilities and improving it every day. We got excited expecting each new version. Recently we were witnesses at something new named RealDrums and shortly after the RealTracks come!. While we are still waiting for Santa, PG Music continues making dreams true so that child will not remain just beside the Christmas tree.

Actually Ryszard, as far as drums and percusion goes you can make your own RD sets. There are instructions here on the site. I made a small one once, and others did as well. You just can't make RTs they are more complicated.
