Greetings,

Heres the background ... I am using VSC, and sometimes I get weird sounds. It doesn't happen when I start PTP2010 and load my first seq file. But when I load a subsequent seq file, sometimes some sounds will start normally, and then they will sustain (?) for a long time. If I manually open up the Dxi VSC user interface, it seems to automatically correct the problem.

My question is, what code can I put in my seq file to reset the VSC when the file loads or begins to play? I have tried putting cc121 at the beginning of each track, but that doesn't help. Also, I have been trying to send SysEx messages to the VSC, but I have not been successful in sending any kind of SysEx to the VSC. I was hoping to be able to reset the VSC at the start of a song file using SysEx.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am living in the Republic of Panama at the moment, and my studio consists of a netbook running XP, PTP2010, and VSC. It doesn't get any more bare bones than this. So any help is appreciated.

Mucho gracias ... Lare

GM reset is CC123

Easy to remember, it is as easy as one, two, three.

In addition to Mac's suggestion, is this the procedure you've used?

Insert this GM reset code on the first line F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7?
Make sure it's on Auto.

Since I now use fewer midi voices due to RTs, I still add the Sysex resets to each SEQ file. It ensures that my XG sounds reset for the one or two midi tracks that I do have, even though it has no effect on the audio. I also use a CC123 on each midi track for insurance. Seems to do fine.

One of our members LynB had this solution to the VSC and sysex - have you seen it?
Quote:

The VSC supports Sysex commands - open VSC Panel - select Help and then (I think) Midi Implimentation. As far as I can remember there is a full explanation of all the controllers, RPNs, NRPNs, and System Exclusive code. As a suggestion, transfer the Sysex data from the track to Sysex Window and send from there.

Good Luck - Ian

The reason for the funny behaviour is the use of CC64 Sustain data for a specific Channel in a previous Seq file which remains affecting that Channel until the appropriate CC code is sent. For example: If CC64 Sustain is used to enhance a Piano track on Channel2 and then a new Seq file loaded with Channel 2 used for a string patch then distortion will be experienced as chords are changed before the previous sustained chords have finished.

You can use the Sysex to reset the Synth or Mac's solution which is the quickest. Because I prefer to add a couple of extra Controller and one RPN (Registered Parameter Number) codes to each track, I have a Seq file with the first 16 tracks - Channels 1 to 16 containing the Controller data. This Seq file can then be opened via the File > Load Scrap and Pasted - Merge with existing data into the first 16 tracks of your song.

MAC's suggestion to use CC123 is good practice. This time it didn't help.

With more experimentation, I determined that the problem is that at least one of my files uses a CC72 (decay control). When I load a different seq file, the new file never resets the CC72. Thus the new file uses the old CC72 settings, which causes a long decay. I use a CC121, which is Controller Reset, but this only initializes a selected list of controllers (at least in the VSC), which doesn't include CC72. So now that I know the cause of the problem, I can work around it for now.

As far as sending the SysEx F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7 (GM1 On) as Ian suggested, I have already tried that, as well as SysEx F0 7E 7F 09 02 F7 (GM Off) and SysEx F0 7E 7F 09 03 F7 (GM2 On). I have tried various other messages that the Virtual Sound Canvas should recognize, but nothing works. I have scoured over the help files for the VSC. The Help files indicate which SysEx messages the VSC should receive, but none work. However the Help file does refer to some switches, if they are off, can cause the VSC to not receive SysEx mode messages. I don't see any further explanation in the Help file as to how to make sure the VSC is enabled to receive SyeEx mode messages.

Any further help in getting the VSC to recognize SysEx messages is appreciated.

Too bad, Lare.

Curious though,I thought CC72 was a Yammie control along with 71,73,74. Shows my lack of depth here. If you're programming that much sysex, you're years ahead.
