Up until now I have contented myself playing along to BIAB on my PC by using my Nord as a controoler for two standalones, TruePianos and Native Intruments B4 (hammond). I do this by running the apps outside of BIAB. I was wondering if I could get the sounds on board of the Nord (which I can see on my sound device's mixer to go directly into BIAB via audio. I have a saffire 56 Audio interface and it has a horrendously complex routing GUI here is a video ...if you can be bothered http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/article.php?id=1010 Is it possible? Zero

Well, you could record the Audio output of the Nord as the single Audio input to BiaB quite readily.

Hi Zero, I don't think the routing is too complex comparing the mightiness of the saffire 56 ;-) I use the smaller 24 DSP; probably the two interfaces work in a similar way - the software seems to be nearly the same. I connect the lineOut of the keyboard to one of the first two inputs (combo socket XLR-TRS) and switch to instrument gain; as I understand the saffire 56 has two dedicated instrument inputs (TRS) at the front. So it seems to bee even easier for you. Good luck, Wolfgang

Hi outsider, Thanks for the input and thanks to MAC the Omnipresent god of BIAB too. Yes I think the software is the same: Saffire Control. Yes the Saffire is mighty it is also mighty complex. Although I have ben around DAWS 15/20 years I found it real difficult. I am not techy by nature but learn if I must (much rather play music). My set up is that the audio from the Nord comes in through 5 and 6 channels. No audio is showing up on the levels in BIAB (presently). The routing in Saffire is very complex and their terminology is obtuse. Although I have read all the tutorials and manuals (several times) its still not clear. I have a surround studio, and I have a Ivory 5051 amp routed in. I use the other outputs for the usuals guitar bass, vox etc. Incidently I use WIn7 64 and a number of standalones TruePianos, B4, Pianoteq outside BAIB when I use BAIB as an accopaniment player - this works, but their are a number of issues: I use MME for BIAB and Saffire for Audio out for the standalones. This means that I have to control the BIAB Audio out from Win 7 volume mixer but the standlones dont show up here and must be levelled from within their own apps. Oh for proper mixer and support for a VST instrument panel (a proper one). I have absolutely no idea how to route the Audio appropriately fro the NOrd output (although its hard wired corectly, through this maze. I don't want to upset my set up too much as it also does a lot of toher things. I know I must change something but what? My music teach wants me to record some stuff, but at present I cant even record my standalones into BIAB, or the audio out for the NOrd - so I am snookered. Its so wierd that such an otherwise extremely capable and sophisticated application can make like so difficult in this way. Perhaps PG might wish to comment. Any help apprieciated Z

Sounds like either a routing issue inside the Saffire or you do not have the correct inputs selected in BiaB. Look closely at the audio input selected in BiaB, you may have to use ASIO to get the multiple inputs to show, this would be a Saffire limit, not BiaB. At 6 minute mark of video they show how the routing works pretty clearly.
FWIW you may have better luck using RealBand instead as it allows multiple audio ports to be used..

rharv makes a good point.
I'd be trying every pair of inputs showing in BB one at a time to see which one or which ones BB does recognize. Since BB really wasn't made for use with multiple input/output soundcards, having only one Audio track we can record to, it is very likely that BB is hardwired to one of the other track sets. Not a kill, but you may have to connect the Nord to the Input you find that BB recognizes.

Thanks folks, If your audio routing is set up right, what do you need to do before you can hear the Audio thru BIAB? Do you need to press record? I ask because at present nothing is working. I figured out that if you use MME you cant even see the routings in my system you just get 'Microphone Saffire Audio' which I presume means either the first mono input or stereo pair? Anyways I have decided to select the Saffire Asio which offers no less that 28 input pairs starting at 0 &1 in BIAB . The Saffire labels these differently - starting at one rather than zero, so I have worked out that the inputs on my saffire (5 & 6) which I have used correspond to 4 & 5. I have set to these.
If I click on the speaker/level icon I get the windows Sound dialogue coming up this has Microphone Saffire Audio come up, but no channels are seen there and no activity is seen on the VU level thing (right hand side of windows SOund dialogue Record tab) even when there is clearly Realtrack sound outputting from BIAB - I can hear it. If I click on the R.Aud I can see input coming in from the Nord keyboard in the VU meters here, but the output channels remain inactive. I have checked the output ports of the output port windwindow in the BIAB Asio Drivers dialogue, this is corectly set to 0,1.
this is mystifying..
its very confusing.
thanks for the help

Rharv has the right suggestion for you. Real Band or at least another sequencer like Sonar, Pro Tools, whatever. Biab is not designed for this. I'm not saying it's impossible, there's probably some clever workarounds but why bother when you already have RB? RB has a full mixer console just like you asked for, you can drag your completed Biab tracks or generate them from scratch from within RB, hook up your Nord and all your different synths, each on it's own track, and record as many parts as you want. If you want to play your keyboard in Biab use the Thru track, select the Saffire midi driver and make sure you match the midi channel.

Jazzmammal et al.
Well I have to accept this, but "BIAB not designed for this" its accompaniment player that cant accompany either my VSTS or Audio input form my keyboard and sits vey acwardely with my standalones. I find this poor.

Zero, have you tried RB?
Setting it up in RB and getting it working may show you what you need to change in BiaB. I still think the correct input isn't selected in BiaB. When you click the VU's in BiaB, you get the basic windows sound applet?
RB is the sister program to BiaB, meant to do things more along the lines of the advanced audio you are trying to do.
Very likely you can run your VSTi's inside the RB program instead of standalone and have the control you want, plus you can easily record from multiple inputs (once set up correctly) and even send things out multiple ports for your 'surround' setup. You can also still generate backups, although not quite the same as BiaB.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Well, if you are running ASIO inside BiaB, Windows Sound is not going to see the ASIO sound...

Hi Zero, probably it's neither the problem of Biab (although audio routing is not too convenient here) nor of the Saffire but of MME, which is originally restricted to two audio (or one stereo) audio channels. So from a multichannel interface only the inputs 1 and 2 show up. Your instrument inputs are afaik routed to channel 5 and 6, so they are invisble for MME. That's the reason why I had no problems: My Saffire 24 has the instrument inputs on 1 and 2. Some interfaces overwit MME by establishing multiple virtual interfaces for each pair of inputs; my Phonic Helix 12 Firewire Mixer for instance appears in MME as "Phonic 1/2", "Phonic 3/4" and so on, and I can select the appropriate one. The Saffire doesn't use the trick; in consequence under MME only the first two inputs can be used. Is it indispensible that you use MME in Biab? MME seems to be somewhat outdated. I use ASIO for both the standalones and biab with no issues: in the driver settings within Biab I select the Saffire input where I connected the keyboard; I could even record the (Saffire)-output of a standalone e-piano software. Good luck Wolfgang

Thanks for the input.
I am using Asio now - no joy
Yes Mac you cant see Asio under WIndows.
So its either Asio and no mixing facility or MME and no channels visible,
So, its high time that BAIB had a mixer, proper, inside application, routings and the ability to host VSTs properly - i say this in the hope PG is listening. Its stll a great program but it is crippled in substantial was.
Wil I use real band? Well I guess I will have no choice. Another layer of complexity - what wil BIAB do and what will RB do and what will they not do, I guess I am compelled to spendhours doing this I think its like avig a word processer that does not do paragraph formatting, or font changing, and simply supplies another application to do this instead at a stroke making everything more tedious and complex even though the 'roblem' issue is 'solved' Much better tat the original application contains all functionality.
BIAB without mijxer and VST hoting, without ability to input Audio correctly is a cripled application. Sorry to say this as in other ways its tremendous and vey well thought out, howeever it doesnt provide essential functionality.

Reading all of these posts I would recommend you CALL tech support. If I understand your questions I and many others have been doing this for years with BIAB but with only ONE keyboard at a time. Everytime I get no sound I have gotten up and running with sound in 5-10 minutes when I call the tech support line. I try and figure out stuff on my own but after a couple of hours of getting no where I call for help and it works! Don't mean to put down the helpers here but when someone can talk you through it or even get on remote control and fix it they seem to spot what the problem is faster than when I'm trying to explain whats going on in my weak untechie way.

I have called techh and they said it is impossible to record the audio from the NOrd using BIAB. They suggest Real Band. I am trying Real Band and YES I can get audio into Real Band and even hear it, BUT There is no sound from the actual track nwo. I feel fed up it shouldn't be this hard. I now have another whole application to learn and two to juggle with and both don't work, despite a lot of help from tech and the forum. Life should be easier in a pro application.
thanks everyone \I am still grateful for the input.

Hi, I'm a bit upset: Why should it be impossible? Although Biab is not a dedicated recording software, it wasn't too difficut for me to get recorded the sounds I wanted in Biab. There is one important limitation: Biab has only one track for audio recordings. So I switch to RealBand if I want to have two or more audio tracks to record on. But may be I still don't understand your specific issue. First: You want to record the sound provided by the Nord, am I right? Then the problem is the routing of the intruments line out to Biab via the Saffire. Let's say the Nord is connected to input 5. If I select channel 5 as the ASIO input I can easily record my keyboard. It's a bit unvenient to change the audio driver to switch back to the microphone, but it works for me. Second: Or do you want to record the sound provided by the standalone software? Then the same computer has to produce the sounds and to record them. I assume that it must be possible with your Saffire; I tested it this today for the first time with the LoungeLizard e-piano and it worked. May be we can figure out the issue; I hope so. Ok, I would like to have some improvements in recording within BiaB, too. But if I want to record one single track, there was always a way. Regards Wolfgang

Sounds like in many ways you and I have been or are in the same boat. I don't know how many times I have said the same thing about BIAB, PowerTracks Pro, Real Band, Reaper and Pro Tools. Seems every easy piece of software I have is next to impossible to use the way I want to use it. These damn computers are so stupid!!! Totally never have a clue as to how they are supposed to make life easier not harder!!!
The only solutions seem to be to give up, just keep hacking away at it, divorce the wife and spend the rest of your life hidden away with the stuff until you learn it, or my latest tactic is to sign up for a full fledged musical tech recording program at the local community college and hope that as I go through the course some of it will apply to the programs I use. So far, that does seem to be working a little. Just haven't gotten that far into the program yet.

Thanks all:
BIAB I can see input on the VU meters so everything is right for input, but no sound coming out (although I can hear the real tracks).
RealBand: I can hear the Nord sounds but I cant hear the real tracks.
this about sums it up at present.

Sounds like you are trying to apply the soundcard as the Default choice in RB by going to Prefs->Audio.
If so, I recommend putting that back to wherever it was when you could hear the RealTracks first.
Then, in Tracks View, RightClick on the Track where you want to record the Nord, just underneath the trackname, and the popup menu there will show you the options to select that soundcard set of channels to record the Nord on that track.

And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
