If you have access to your original install key, and an XP boot disk - If you updated to IE8 then it MUST have IE7 on the boot disk (NOT ie8 nor ie6 according to my lead tech IIRC) and try a repair install - best to have a clone copy first. This is not a guaranteed fix but you might get enough of your Windows install back to get the email functioning.
