You'd be fun to hang with on a rainy Saturday afternoon ...we could find lots of crazy stunts.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Squiers are not necessarily made in Mexico.

See here for a good serial number lookup on country of origin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squier

If you are going to buy a guitar without playing it, I would strongly suggest also looking to Rondomusic.net for strat-style guitars. I've purchased a Custom Precision bass copy from there with extremely higher build quality and shielding work than my Made in Mexico (MIM) Fat Strat. I also own a classical cedar topped guitar from Rondo that I couldn't be happier with.

I've lost count of the folks I know in person and on-line that swear by the bang-for-the-buck from Rondo; particularly the SX and Agile brands that they sell.

Rondo makes good deals.

And for a few bits more, you can specify Alnico pickups already installed on many of their models, as well.

I have read with interest the dialogues on Fender guitars. I have two in my “stable” and they are both great guitars. My “haul anywhere” guitar is a Squire with a set neck and humbuckers. I can’t remember the exact model as they quit making it a few years back. I can tell you it was replaced in the Fender line as follows “Special Edition Custom Telecaster® FMT HH The rather scorching and aesthetically appealing Custom Telecaster FMT HH guitar features a carved flame maple top with cream binding, a set neck, two Seymour Duncan® humbucking pickups, a string-through body hard-tail bridge, three-way switching and a pull/push coil tap”. The only difference is my model is a lightly metallicized black finish, and no binding. This is a great guitar with jumbo frets. It plays and sounds fantastic! My other is a Deluxe players strat with the sapphire blue finish. It is the workhorse guitar due to its versatility. If your could only have one guitar in your arsenal then I believe the strat will cover most sound styles.
Rharv your point on Tanglewood guitars is well made. I have owned a model TW45N-DLX-FC4 for about 7 years, and would recommend them. I don’t see this model in their catalogue but it is similar to the TW145 folk series except the body styling is closer to a Taylor CE312. I played four of these guitars before settling on the one I own, and I feel the tone is excellent enough to be called my poor mans Taylor. I had a luthier do some custom nut work and custom bridge work as well as rolling the neck edge a bit. I also heeded Mac’s advice and got rid of the quacking Fishman piezo and put in a LR Baggs pickup. The sound amplified is superb. Thanks again Mac for the suggestion. DennisD

If the Strats are anything like the SX P Bass I just got from Rondo you can't go wrong. The thing is real nice and only $109
