Hello Friends, We added a few more cover songs to our website all done with BIAB Real Tracks. The vocals are done by John and I and the lead guitar parts are done by me. Band in A Box has really become the software to have for any musician. For a couple of "old geezers" biab still lets up play and record. Thanks to all who have had a hand in developing such a wonderful product. Also kudos to all the fine people on this forum who are always at the ready to assist. Listened to each of the songs and I've got to say (this might hurt some others feelings but it has a lot to do with MY taste so...) this is the best stuff I've heard to date using BIAB.

Awesome job, made me sad, the voice sounds low and mellow like mine was before they radiated my neck. I hope someday to talk without coughing and hacking every 20 seconds.
This is my kind of stuff. I don't know what you are playing or not but a lot of the sounds I hear on my system when playing with Band in a Box through my Bose L1.
Congrats!

Hello John, Thanks for the compliments. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought only original tunes could be posted on the user showcase. Have a great day and get that voice healed! Marty

You know how it is, man. Just be discreet, change the name of your song like everybody else does and have some fun. PG does that with the style names like Chuck.sty or Herbie. Gee, wonder who that is? Change it to something like "Since I Sat On You" or "I'll Never Forget the Day You Erased "I Love You" From the Blackboard Of Your Heart" by Joe Banana and his Bunch or whatever. We'll figure out what it is. Shhh, don't tell Peter I said this....oh crap who's that knockin on my door....I didn't do it, I swear! Honey, call Sue, Grabbitt and Runne and don't say ANYTHING..

One thing to consider (take this with a grain of salt from another geezer that plays covers, and has them posted on the web) But the reason that PG, and Notes Norton get away with selling files that can be used for cover songs is that they do not consist of melody lines, but only have chords. Chord structures can not be copy written, only melody lines can. Because chords can be played for more than one song. That is why it says "in the style off".

Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can dodge copyright law by simply changing the name of a song.
For one thing, song names are NOT copyrightable material.
The MELODY of a song is the copyrightable material here.
If the MELODY is the same as a copyrighted song and you sing, play or otherwise have that Melody in your posted song, it does not matter if you name it anything different at all. You still are violating the copyright law, because of that Melody.
Changing songnames in an attempt not to be discovered likely won't work, anyway. At best it might extend the amount of time before someone gets that Cease and Desist letter.
Just the way it is,

Interesting thought. I'd like to build on it...
The discussion of cover songs goes in many directions. On one hand, BIAB/RB makes it very easy to enter the chords to a well-known song and assign a different style to it for a fresh-sounding version of the song. We could all do that all day long (though some would do it better than others)
Another, more elusive side of the topic concerns how to use PGMusic products to nail the sound of a cover song... and then share the trick with others. (without causing legal problems for PGMusic)
It might be fun to start a thread called IN THE STYLE OF to see what tips, tricks and techniques people come up with to capture the sound of various covers. The trick would be to avoid the melody and lyrics of specific songs, substituting something else. Or you could present it as a backing track, thereby omitting both melody and lyrics... (good idea to omit signature riffs too)
You wouldn't even have to name the song, just say "here's a song in the style of (insert artist here)" for example, and it would be obvious which song you were emulating. Having done that, you could then proceed to reveal which real tracks you used, which playalong guitars and effects were used etc
As noted above, I believe this approach has allowed Notes Norton and PGMusic to do what they do without violating any laws, so it should work for us too. If anybody at PGMusic thinks this is a bad idea, now might be a good time to speak up.

Would also have to avoid any musical riffs that are recognized as melodic content of a copyrighted song.
For example, you shouldn't include that signature guitar line from Day Tripper or the opener to Secret Agent, etc. etc.
Some repetitive musical riffs may also be covered by mechanical if not outright copyrights as well.
