Since our move to Mesa AZ, my wife and were delighted to find that the seniors community we bought in has a small church service on Sunday mornings. We attended our first service last Sunday, and I was asked to perform a couple of songs today. So I packed up my Larrivee, grabbed my gig bag, used a compressor and a phase shifter set to minimum which gives a nice chorus effect on the guitar, and used the Peavey PA system in the ballroom.

I was set up and sound checked in about 20 min, my wife dialed in the fine tuning during the first verse of the first song, and that was it. It was well received with lots of compliments etc. Felt kinda good to do a simple set with no hour set up and tear down, etc. I didn't even use any sound tracks, but would like to for a longer set.

I did my ahem "stylings" of "The Lighthouse" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand". Only about 50 or so people, so it would be interesting to do a longer set with twice the number and see how that goes. I had forgotten how nervous I can get when you "Are the show". No backup, if ya blow it ya get to blow it on your own.......... Kinda keeps us honest I guess.

I applaud those who do this on a regular basis.

Good thing.

Y'know, I USE the nervousness to channel the energy.

Matter of fact, if I find that I'm NOT the least bit nervous about a performance, well, that's when I'm likely to blow it.

A little bit of that nervousness is good then.

A LOT of nervousness is another matter entirely.

Just another discipline that we should master.

There is an upside to all that. Afterwards, there is exhilaration.

They'll have you come back again, no doubt.

Good job.

Good for you, Toucher. There are few things better than messing around with our software, cables and ideas in the home studio. But playing live is one of them.
Good luck with the next show.
Take care,

Marc

Great to hear it went well. Mesa's a neat little community, used to live near there so years ago. There should be other gigs in the area when the Snow Birds start arriving soon. Plenty of senior community centers and other gatherings will be happening as well.
Good luck, Wyndham

Glad to hear you had a good outing Toucher, like Mac said you will be back.

For what it worth I also like the feel of a little bit of an edge while counting off the first tune on any gig.

Keep us posted on subsequent outings.

Totally agree. This is sort of the drug we all crave. Why play in public otherwise.

Totally related to the other thread. You are right John, I don't jump out of airplanes, I don't play sports much anymore, and i don't do much that has excitement, and makes me feel alive. Playing live does that for me. a good rush keeps the heart pumping.

Toucher, I read your post with interest as I too will be making a solo foray soon. Whereas I do play monthly in a 16 pc swingband it has been decades since I did a solo act. I went to a jam a week back, my first in many a year. The venue was mostly country and old-old-old standards. I was even able to back up the elderly lady piano player doing gay ninetys tunes. I must have aquited myself quite nicely as I was offered a singles gig for their community social event. Now my only problem is trying to get some semblence of arrangements for this gig using BIAB. It's the intros and endings to my song selections that is going to take the work to make them "professional". In any case I am looking forward to the gig with intrepidation and enthusiasm! DennisD
