Hi again out there. It is a loooong time since I have been on the forum. It is good to see that "the old boys" is still going strong I have done some recordings of spoken words (for a local museum), but have problems with geting the sound good. ( sound like "background noice") Is there some of you out there that have the time and upotunity to help me out? ( Finding a way to equalize or filter this noice out as mutch as possible using the eqalizers and filters in Power Tracks, so it is possible for me to dublicate it) It would be nice if it was possible to do this by mail, so I could send the mp3 file with the mail. Best regards tono

Tono, if you send me the MP3 I'll use adobe audition and hopefully kill a lot of the background noise. If there's some blank spaces in between the audio IE vocal pauses, it'll clear background noises easily

I always used goldwave, it used to be free to use. it had a great noise reduction plugin, that did what furry suggests. You blow up the wave pattern and take a close look at a space between words. It will take a snapshot of the noise in that spot and remove it through out the track. http://www.goldwave.com/

The problem is that it sounds like the track is "clean" between the words?

Hi, Tono - If you send me the file, I'd also be happy to take a look at it, also. I use Diamond Cut version 8, which has some great noise reduction filters (they call it the continuous noise filter). Sometimes the program's developers even help out with the best filter settings to use if I send them a snippet of the file. They also have a friently forum much like the PGMusic forum.

Tono, I concur with Furry that Adobe Audition has a known-to-be-excellent noise reduction capability, and he made a very generous offer. So did John. However, if the track has NO sound between words, it was recorded with some sort of gate and it will be harder to do what you need. Voice-activated recorder? I assume from the combination of info in your two posts that the background noise is underneath the words only. Perhaps adjusting the EQ with a tight Q will make the words 'pop out' more, if you can find the frequency of the voices without also boosting the noise?

You are correct Matt, I have done some EQ, but I am absolutely not an expert, and I guess that to "pinpoint" the noice frequency only is not for amateurs:-)

Do you still have the recording in it's original form? Much easier to do if you do have it.

Noise typically covers a very broad range of frequencies.
It is therefore not a good idea to attempt to use EQ to cancel noise, for you would likely have to cut frequencies that also contain the information that is desired.
A Noise Cancelling Algorithm that SAMPLES the noise and then mathematically introduce the exact opposite to the entire file can sometimes do the trick, depending on how bad the noise is.
The free Audacity.exe Audio Editor program has a Noise Cancelling plugin included.
You highlight an area where there is nothing but the offending noise and take a sample of that with one mouseclick.
Then you highlight the entire track using Select All and have the plugin apply to the entire track.
Audition your result. If okay, you can save it that way. If the result is not up to the task, such as in it having too many digital artifacts, you can select Undo and then go back and repeat the application of the algorithm with a simple one-slider adjustment and audition the results again.
After application of the Noise Reduction algorithm, I find it is still necessary to go through a file such as that and find all the areas that are supposed to be silent, highlight each area and select the Silence command. This is especially important to do at the very beginning of a file and at the end, where there is usually a section of silence.
