I am baffled.

I am trying to use Realband as a sort of scratchpad arranger with midi. I set track 1 to be a flute and track 2 to be a jazz guitar. After entering a dozen or so bars, I gave it a listen. To my surprise I either get both tracks playing flute, or both tracks playing guitar. If I change one instrument, realband plays both parts with the latest instrument chosen.

I am using my M-Audio Pro as a MIDI out to a Ketron SD2. But the problem remains if I switch to my native sound card and a vst synth.

If I load an older song, everything plays normally, so there must be a setting in this song that is causing the problem.

What the heck is going on?

Thanks

John

Each sound (patch) needs its own MIDI channel
My guess is that both tracks are on the same MIDI channel (probably 1)
So when you change the sound assigned to that MIDI channel it changes both tracks.
You could use Edit-rechannel to change one of the tracks to a different MIDI channel.
Or right-click the track name area and change the MIDI channel.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
Make your sound your own!

Thank you. I obviously don't understand the channels, because not just any old channel will do. I have more learning to do.

Midi is confusing. Load up one of your old songs that play properly and study not just the midi channels but everything about each track. Look at the stuff that opens up when you right click over the track name, the area that opens up when you hit the little down icon in the lower left of the track name area, the "edit Dxi" window that opens up when you hit that button, all of it. Then, when you're done with that, open up the piano roll window, and all the other windows like the mixer, the midi monitor, the bars window (my favorite for copying and moving whole sections of a tune around), the audio edit window and anything else that has a cool looking icon. Real Band is very powerful once you get the hang of it.

You can use any channel for any track, but each track that is a unique instrument needs it's own channel. For example, if you have flute and jazz guitar track, you could assign the flute to channel 1 and the guitar to channel 2. If you had a piano maybe channel 3. If you have two jazz guitar tracks and wanted the same patch sound they could theoretically both be sent to channel 2. The only variation of this is that in most situations drums must be on channel 10.

Yeah, found out about the drums. Tried putting the flute to 1 and the guitar to 10. It was pretty funny.

Bob's suggestion is a good one for all of us newbies. We are all to impatient; Sometimes we just need to force ourselves to sit down and learn. Wish I had done this long ago.
