I am trying to copy a small vocal part from a backup of a song, to the version I am working on. When I go to paste the vocal part into my working version, I get a "No midi data on clipboard" message and it does not copy.
Why do I need to have midi data on an non-midi recorded vocal part? And if I need it, how can I copy that data along with the vocal?

Vocal parts are audio not midi, as you said, so make sure you are pasting to an audio track, and it should work. Look at the track in the tracks view and see what it is designated as.

I am copying from an recorded vocal audio track, been doing it for months within the same song. This is the first I have tried to copy audio from one song and open a newer version to paste in, and get this error message: "not retrieving midi data from clipboard". It pastes ok if I stay in same file and not try and open another file.

Can't be done BUT......workaround
1. Open the song were the vocal is
2. Highlite the section you want to transfer over
3. Enter D&D mode
4. D&D the track onto the desktop.
5. Open the file were you want it to end up
6. D&D from the desk top to the location you want it.
7. Exit D&D mode.

First, save the original vocal track. Then use "Edit-Fill Track" select the original, select an audio track in Rb and then "paste." Should work?

Not to add to the confusion, but -
Open original seq file
Highlite desired track
Track-Save track to file (saves track to a wav file)
Open current seq file
select blank track
Audio-Import Wave File (Imports said wav file into new project)
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

All of these methods work fine. You just can't do the Windows copy/paste thing.

And that in itself is indeed strange that you can't use the clipboard to move an "audio clip".   WISH LIST - so basic, so simple. Obviously has been overlooked. Ian

This is just a theory-
DAW software actually keeps audio in a different format. When you save a seq file the audio in 'interleaved' on the disk. Each track is in systematic chunks, so the drive head doesn't have to jump all over the disk to keep streaming audio (known as thrashing). So when you copy a track you are actually copying lots and lots of chunks of data.
And different DAWs may use different size chunks in a slightly different format. So 'copying' an audio clip can be quite a task in itself, and then pasting it elsewhere could be problematic. The 'wav' format became the standard for assembling these chunks in a universal format that most DAWs can use. I think this comes into play when some people have long D&D times; the system is jumping around trying to assemble stuff and then disassemble it into the other DAW.
This is all just a guess from what little I know (which the wife says is just enough to be dangerous).

It's not an "audio clip", it's an .seq file so nothing's been overlooked. If you save as a .wav then Windows can handle it. This has gotten me more then once, too. After several times of listening to a particular tune, I will try to move a track and forget about that and wonder why can't I do this? Then suddenly it's oh yeah, forgot to save it as a .wav first. The next time, I'll try the D & D thing to the desktop, that sounds a bit faster.

The D&D to the desktop is indeed very quick. Once you enter D&D mode the RB screen gets small and the Desktop is right there. 2 moves back and forth.

Sorry, but that's not true. Copying and audio tracks and pasting it on a new project doesn't work well in BIAB and RB, but is supported by many DAWs on the market. Unfortunately, the standard copy / paste feature is only half-implemented in both programs and don't work well on different situations.

Cerio , you're making the same mistake. Define "audio track". Just because you open Sonar, Reaper, Cubase or whatever DAW and can hear sound does NOT mean that DAW saves the project as simple .wav files. They can do it but just like PG Music, you have to tell it specifically that's what you want. Whatever your favorite DAW is, try importing a CD or .wav track into it, you will wait while your DAW converts it to it's own internal file format. Unless you change that, it will stay in that format. There's tons of digital audio recording websites that go into how can you send tracks to different people that happen to have different DAW's. The answer usually is convert the tracks to .wav files because everybody can work with those. If I were to send you a Sonar track for example and you have Pro Tools, PT can't open it.

Jazzmammal, I was just saying that any modern secuencer should use Windows clipboard properly, wich means the ability to copy / paste audio data WITHIN the application. You just can't do that in the actual version of RB, and having to export data to a WAV file in order to import it again into a new project is not a very elegant solution.
BTW, there are some DAWs (for ex., Cubase) wich works with WAV files natively. Regards,

Yes, there are plenty of softwares that allow for cut and paste via the Windows clipboard.
Unfortunately, RB is not one of them.
But if you follow the directions already given, such as the use of the Drag and Drop feature, you can get there just the same.

Agree. Sonar does but hat RB does things that Sonar doesn't. BTW I never use Sonar anymore and it was my favorite.

Ok, I see. I'm not intimately familiar with all the different DAW's but I've read extensive websites that go into comparisons and I just looked up some of them again. When they talk about native cut/paste all they talk about is cutting and pasting within the current project not doing it from one project to another. Not proof they can't do it though. If some of them do that, I'll take your word for it. As to RB, dragging to the desktop and back doesn't involve converting to a wav file. Silvertones clued me in to that one.

Sonar allows that however it also allows for multiple projects to be open at once.
