I bought a couple of JBL LSR 2328P studio monitors back in March. Had an amplifier go out in one and just got it back today. Problem.... the volume on the repaired one is louder than the other one. I have to turn down the repaired one 2 notches lower than the other one. I called the speaker shop and he said bring them both in for a comparison. Anyone else ever have this problem? Thanks.

Was it a factory authorized repair shop?

Might not have the same amp in both speakers anymore if not.
I would hesitate to leave both speakers with them if they ask...

Yes, it was a factory authorized shop and they had ordered the part from JBL (warranty). I've done business with the place since the 60s so I trust them. Was just wondering if anyone else had ran into this problem. I live about 70-80 miles away so I'm dreading the return trip to Dallas. Thanks for the reply, rharv.

Maybe there was an 'improvement' to that line somewhere along the way and now the new amp is different.

How old are they?

I bought them in March of this year but don't see a manufacture date anywhere. The first numbers of the S/N read 0903 so I'm wondering if that might be March of '09? I will call JBL to see if I can get further information.

Talked to JBL and the tech said to take them back to speaker shop because it sounded scwoowy to him. So another trip is in order.

An addendum: I've got some Creative computer speakers that cost, maybe $15, and some Bose computer speakers from Best Buy that cost around $100. Neither has ever had a problem (years). Now I've got some $700 speakers that don't last 7 months.

Those Bose and Creative speakers (most likely) don't have amps built into them..
If they are just speakers I have some speakers over 30 yrs old! (Don't use them much as they are 'dead' sounding but they work)

I have had issues with JBL speakers, mostly the tweeters going.. one set I have is 15 yrs old and I have replaced 2 tweeters.
Another is 5+ and going strong.

I happen to like JBL as a company and think they shoot for quality product. Maybe you got a bad set, or the repair shop did something 'different'. Could be they were "soft" from the get-go and the new amp shows this. I wouldn't be surprised if the end result was replacing both amps for the same price (so they match). Should be under warranty still, I would think.

The bose speakers have no amps but the creative do. They don't sound very good at all but the bose are not that bad.

I think they will probably have to replace the other amp as well to get them equal. They will be very loud because the volume on the repaired speaker is only set to 'one notch below a 1/4.' So if I set them to one notch above a 1/4, as I had before the problems, they will definitely be plenty loud.

Charlie, before you drive, call back the actual JBL tech and have him send you an RMA and shipping label. Send them to him for repair/replacement. You shouldn't have to drive again.

Scott, the shipping on the monitors would be phenomenol, as heavy as they are. More than the gas, I'm sure (and my time). With a little acceptance I guess I can make the trip. Thanks for the suggestion.

When stuff is under warranty they should be sending you an RMA with prepaid UPS/FedEx shipping labels.

First, switch connections right at the back of the speakers in order to see if the problem is in the speakera themselves or perhaps in your cabling/linefeed. If the problem changes sides, it wouldn't be the speaker at fault.

Different volume levels could be caused by any number of things, not necessarily a different amplifier, which, with the same power supply, couldn't really make more power anyway.

Very easily could be something in the gain-staging area *before* the actual power amps.

Just send 'em back, they will get to the bottom of it for you.

John, I never knew they did that. I usually pay for the shipping back to them and they supply an RMA number.

Hey, Mac. Yes, I've tried all the switching around. Will just make the drive the first of the week.

Thanks for all the replies.
