All of the forums I visit have senior age members that are increasingly discussing what is the best way to handle their "stuff".
Generally the "stuff" is music instruments, home studio hardware, sheet music or books. But some have other interests like video or photography. All have an investment interest in their hobbies.
Most want to downsize because they no longer play live or the equipment is too heavy to lug around. Some are moving from their home of many years to someplace where space is limited.
The question is what to do with the excess. Most say family or friends do not want the excess and / or will not appreciate the stuff or properly take care of it.
Have you guys thought about this and how you hope to answer the question when the time come?

Hi, Jim. I think about this from time to time. The Intellectual Property, such as it is, will likely be available publicly for a short time, and then evaporate. So it goes.
Notionally, the musical hardware that I can't transfer to others first ends up in the hands of students somewhere. I sell a lot of gear, primarily guitars. If the buyer is a kid, I usually just give it to them. Sometimes I'll throw in other stuff they need like amps, straps, cords, etc. I mean, it's only STUFF, right?
I need to do some more work on how to formalize all this for those that have to clean up the mess, assuming I don't clean it up first.
Then again, we don't always control the timeline...

This is a thoughtful topic, Jim.
I have a friend in California who sells pro instruments on consignment, and my family knows to ship my horns out there. My horns are high end and will bring many thousand each in the right hands. Not exactly the typical $20 trumpet in a yard sale (sorry, bargain hunters)
But my computer stuff, while tailored for composing and arranging, would be useful for any media work. My son-in-law produces video greeting cards - you know where Dolly Parton says Happy Birthday to you by name - so he will have people who know what I do.

I'm 6 years older than Mrs. Notes and male, so chances are I will go first.
My wife also plays guitar, so she decides what to do with them. Saxes, flutes, wind synths, should go to students, or anyone else she wants to give it to. She is more generous than I am, so that's OK. Anything else I leave behind, she can make the decision.
If I go last, all the instruments go to students, for free.
I don't collect instruments, I have a gigging guitar, a similar backup, and an acoustic. Gigging tenor sax, backup, and an alto. Wind synth and a backup. None are collectors items. So the students get useful stuff bot not a windfall.
I have a lot of music books and sheet music. These should go to a music school.
My BiaB products should go to public domain when we are both gone. We don't have children to leave them to, and I can't see anyone else making a profit of them.
I'm not planning on leaving this stage soon, but, you never know.

I contemplate this often. When I walk into my shop, and my studio and look at the "stuff" I have.
Obviously, it has value, much of it sentimental, but some of it has a tangible value. The amps, guitars, radios, tools, etc....
Much of my studio gear would only have a value if someone wants to take the time to learn how it works, which is really doubtful. So, aside from the value of the old computer and monitor and the guitars.
Most of the stuff in the shop would go straight to the landfill because no one is going to expend the effort to sell it.
I saw this firsthand when we decided to clean out the junk in my father in law's two garages. He would drive around the neighborhood on trash night and pick up stuff he thought was valuable. Bikes, furniture, lawnmowers and more. He planned to fix it and sell it but never seemed to get to the fix it part. Literally, open the door and stuff was piled up.
We decided to clean out the junk when the city announced a special trash pickup day. Just one garage produced a pile on the curb 25ft long, 10 ft wide 4 ft high. He wasn't very happy about it. However, no sooner did we start piling stuff up and dragging out the many lawnmowers and other mechanical things, people started pulling up and rummaging through the junk and loading up their cars and trucks, some coming back for more. After we got as much out as we could on that day working only a couple of hours, the job wasn't completely done and the other garage was barely touched. We did eventually get the two garages cleaned out.
I attempt, periodically, to clean out the stuff in my shop that I haven't touched since I put it on the shelves 10 years ago. But I know it is functional and as soon as I toss it in the landfill, I will need it and then have to go buy one.
More than likely, my daughters will have to deal with it after I'm gone or whoever buys the property "as is" after I depart this earthly realm.
The struggle is real.

I'm 65 I have already made some arrangements in this regard. A couple special instruments are earmarked in my will for a couple special people but the majority of my stuff is going to be donated to Guitars For Vets As a former US Marine I thought that was something I could do that would be useful and not have everything wind up in pawn shops or just sitting around collecting dust. As for my music IP I am giving that to my (currently 5 year old) grandson . . . He loves coming over to play with grandpas guitars and keyboard and such and is the only family member who has ever expressed an interest. He also has a surprisingly decent voice already and memorizes songs he likes to sing all the time. Mainly I just don't want the stuff to go to waste and I feel obligated to at least try and do something to make a few lives better at least when I'm passed on . . .

I like the sentiments I’m hearing about supporting kids and putting equipment to its best use. My better horns should be in the hands of pros, but I’m actively giving away much of my other music equipment to the charity/school that supports the local high school musicians here. I also write music for one of their bands and mentor the students by playing with them.

One of my summer tasks is to hire someone to help me take a complete inventory. I’ve been accumulating instruments and recording gear since 1969. Pretty certain that my 8 week old grandson won’t be able to use it all, right?
Seriously, I’ve been giving gear to relatives and friends but have just scratched the surface. As I’ve told my older daughter, “No, you don’t get all the Brazilian rosewood Martins, all the Neumanns and the Bösendorfer.”

My instruments are more tools than collector's items.
My gigging guitar and gigging sax are both custom shop items. The backup guitar is similar, and the backup sax is an advanced student model.
The PA set is road weary with a lot of cosmetic defects due to the fact that I mostly do one-nighters.
And I don't collect gear that I don't need or use. There isn't anything wrong with collecting, it's just not my thing. I get my musical joy in gigging.
So I think free to students who can't afford a nice instrument, and wouldn't mind the wear would be the best use.

If someone wants my stuff when I'm gone, and they will USE it, they are welcome to it in my view.
Daughters get first dibs, but for heaven's sake don't throw it out, it might make someone's life brighter. At least ask if anyone wants it.

Little by little, I am giving it all away as I meet someone who really needs the guitars and such that I have. The rest of the "stuff" is just that, stuff. I did not get here with it, and I am not taking it with me. My wife has some idea what some of the things I have are worth. If she dies first, I don't care what happens to the "stuff" when I die. There is equipment I own that very few people would have any idea of what I am doing with it. I have made some original discoveries in genetics that I could not get published in the USA because I am not under the watchful eye of a university. I had to go to Europe and publish through Zenodo. Very interesting conversation! I have a few items that have substantial value that I should plan for but mostly my concern is leaving a huge mess of stuff for my kids to have to sort. I've been to a few estate sales recently and they always make me more than a little sad. Prized possessions being callously stickered and then negotiated over ("yeah, I don't think that is really worth $3 but I'll give you a buck and a half for it.")
And, as for giving stuff away before I croak, I have discovered from first hand experience that most of my stuff has very little value and is of almost no interest to most folks.
But I really like the idea of giving stuff away while we are still here. Even if it just goes to Goodwill that's better than a dumpster my kids have to fill.

For 60K in 1990 I bought a house one lot away from the Indian RIver Lagoon. From living in FL, I observed the closer to the salt water, the greater the rate of appreciation. It's actually on 2 lots. The house is on one, and the other is vacant (I've re-wilded it with native plants that grow here, and a gopher tortoise built his den there). A house on a single lot, but 2 lots farther from the water, similar to mine just sold for $399k, it was sold in a week, and the buyer didn't even barter on the price. If Mrs. Notes or I, whoever is the last person standing needs money for a nursing home, my double lot should do. If not, whoever inherits the house is paid well to clean up what we left there.
