Excellent song construction on all levels. Lyrically a great idea for the theme - I've always felt that songs, poetry and other writings are somehow already 'in the air' and writers are just lucky enough to pluck them when the time is ripe - but here the chord structure, instrumentation, arrangement, mix and production are all first class, so credit is due to the builder of the song. The vocals are perfect for the song's expression, plus I particularly love the lead guitar work. All 100% professional - and no AI! Thanks, Chay. Appreciated.

Superb song, Floyd, and masterfully executed. The opening piano and lead guitar parts set the table perfectly. Your vocals are spectacular. Love the booming chest voice and strong vibrato: Such an effective instrument for conveying emotion and FEELING. Really nice arrangement, and the mix is perfect. Your piano work is quite accomplished even though (I think I recall) you are a relative late bloomer. The lead guitar work is spectacular. I don't write lyrics, but I share your enthusiasm for the discovery of the SONG in the lyrics I get from my brother. The tingle I get when thinking "That's IT. Hey, this is going to be pretty good..." is what keeps me doing this. I always feel like I'm getting a free songwriting master class when I listen to one of your songs. Thanks for that. Hi Floyd!
A really classy sounding song! Very professional, yet the heart feelings come through.
I noticed the similarity between the piano and the vocal phrasing, and it made me wonder what came first for in the songwriting process? Did you start with the piano style and that informed the ‘paper and pen’ metre, or (as I suspect because of your source of inspiration) the metre and melody of the ‘paper and pen’ phrasing was then mimicked on the piano - and in the guitar? In any case, it’s really cool that one is similar to the other, and a useful idea for songwriting.
Your song reminds me of a post that Herb Hartley recently made to the Songwriting forum about what we use to write, and I think back to when I used to write (with paper and pen) lyrics with chords above and then the melody notation elsewhere on the sheet so that I could remember it. I still have those pieces of paper and they are special to me.
Thanks for bringing out this fondness in your own song!
Andrew Thanks, Andrew I sat at the piano "strumming" a chord pattern. The fingering I used became the melody - so, yes, the vocal phrasing and piano phrasing are the same (or similar)...

So nice to hear your music again. I've been away for about 6 months - really bad accident and out of country for a couple of months. But I'm doing much better. When I'm reminded of songwriting, your name is among the very first that crosses my mind.
A lot of us write songs - often pretty danged good. But you construct a song with precision and direction. You have an uncanny relationship with prosody. The vocal and lyric are always a perfect match. I wish I had that ability to the extent you do. There's good, excellent, elite ... and then Floyd Jane.
Nuff said. Besides, that about all I can type at the moment. My fingers aren't working real good.

Great vocal, lyric and production as usual.
I prefer to use the windows notepad as it's tidier and no messy crossing out, but always have paper and pen elsewhere in the house. But I get the point.

i sit in the choir as you write, Floyd. Writing music --creating in general-- is the best part of being human.
Man, this is such a fantastic write, as it should be considering the subject. One can imagine genii flowing from that pen, spilling over the paper, and your hands turning the 88 keys loose. Excellent vocal (hehe --your middle name). Man, i seriously can't wait for that musical, and yes, this song is a must for it. Thanks, Marty! Great end result from your therapy session. The song seems timely when I'm struggling with songwriting, even though I don't use paper and pen, but "Notepad and keyboard" - I guess that wouldn't be as good a title as yours "so look for the light in the tunnel/look for the sun creeping in/look for a way to find your joy" very beautiful lyrics High quality fj production, smooth instrumentation and great vocals. I know Chris always writes with pen to paper, she has a whole folder of lyrics for BA songs, more than 100 I think. Just something very organic doing it that way I think.

I think that paper and pen is very well chosen here, both literally and used as a metaphor.
Yes, I don't need to tell you that this is a very cleverly written text, because all your lyrics are masterpieces in their own right!
The musical accompaniment supports that somber, yet also hopeful, quality of the lyrics well. You did a great job with that!
