Damn I really like that! The guitar fills you(?) played are pretty sweet and really brings something to the song. The lyrics are excellent and make you feel for the poor guy! And if you don't mind me askin' can you explain this? I'm sorta confused RealTracks in style: 2763:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm CountryBluesRockMike Ev 110 (used MIDI chart with Waves GrandRhapsody plugin) Is it it a realtrack or MIDI track? I'm still a BiaB newbie so just wanted to know what you did here. Might be something I can learn from and use in the future

Really well done on the vocal performance, melody and instrumentals. Good song. Just two nits  I agree with Bob about "took" in the first verse. Maybe change to something like: "Thought we had what it took or a pretty good try". The other nit is I think the electric rhythm guitar should stand back 2 or 3 db when you're singing as it's clouding your voice a little. Vic Vic, THANKS for the listen and the feedback. I agree, the "took" lyric is definitely not proper grammar, though it has a quirky charm that I quite like. Have tried every trick I know to hear the electric rhythm guitars overpowering the vocals, but I can't detect it. The two guitars are panned hard left and right, and the vocals are at center. But even flipping to a mono mix didn't reveal an issue. Tried ultra low volume monitoring and I can still hear the vocals clearly, even when the guitars can't be heard at all. Have used multiple audio sources, too. Know the odds of you reading this reply are slim, but if you do, and if you have interest in helping me figure this out, that would be helpful, and I'd be SO grateful. But I understand if not. I mean, who has the time any more?

Hi Ron!
I like the pace of your song - a slight nonchalance to reflect the subject’s attempts to forget. The song had a ‘The Cars’ feel to it, possibly aided by Elliott Easton sounding guitar fills - I like the tone of the guitar fills - a tone like a combination of guitar and organ just like The Cars would use. I would’ve preferred for the piano to have a bit more focus/space to operate in when it came in, but that’s a preference thing, and without the benefit of hearing it isolated, which might change my opinion. Good BVs as usual. I’d put this song amongst my favourites of yours, although ‘The girl from accounting’ is still top.
Andrew THANK YOU, Andrew! Yeah, it's another sad-song-sung-happy thing, a song form I'm overly fond of. I do love the Cars in general and Elliot's favored tone a lot. I was actually going for something more like Waddy Wachtel's work on "It's So Easy", but it ended up sounding more like Robert Fripp, who I also love. It's just a thick, creamy overdrive, but it does sound cool. The piano sounds fine quality wise, and I could have cranked it up, but I didn't want it too far up front due to the BGVs. I ended up liking the way the piano tinkled up to fill out the mix in that last section. Never figured you as a "Girl from Accounting" guy, but it's one of my favorite's, too. One of my few posts with me playing all (both) the guitars. THANKS AGAIN!

Another brilliant song from you, Ron. Love the chord structure and mix, plus I think the guitar fills are really effective and excellent. I suspect that a lot of songwriters will relate to the theme: I don't think about it at all, but I'll still write a song about it!  Thanks, Chay. Yeah, the part near the end where the narrator realizes that "she just gets better..." kills me every time. Certainly an understandable predicament, even if not directly relatable. Appreciate the compliment on the fills. They were a lot of fun! The chord progressions are among the simplest and most repetitive I've posted, but the melody, lyrics and arrangement keep it interesting. I sometimes overcomplicate the music just because I can, and this song is a reminder to me that a good song doesn't always HAVE to...

45 years in the making, just like wine getting better with age. Love your fills, nothing wrong with them, if you throw the ones you discarded my way, I'd be more than satisfied. Loved the harmonies that came into the song toward the end, exceptional. You're a fine musician, lyricist, and artist.

The extra harmony on the chorus at the end is an added high harmony. I'm mostly in falsetto, and not singing it particularly well, but I got away with it in the mix. I do love the dynamic punch of added harmonies. Fun to sing, too.

Due to my advanced age, I don't recall your earlier versions. That said, I definitely like this one better.
Those rather clever lyrics remind me that often our lives, our thoughts, our words, or our beliefs manifest certain contradictions – contradictions that may be manifest to others but not necessarily to ourselves.
Great job. Thanks, Brian. You're much more articulate than I am on the topic, but I agree with you. These lyrics are both subtle and profound, and I'm quite fond of them.

It’s interesting to hear how well the fine lyric works … in both the earlier country version and this one. Nice band and fills by you. It all works for us. I know you had concerns but we don’t, i.e, no nits. We’d rather sit back and listen than to parse it out. That’s our approach when a tune like this grabs us from the get go. Oh, did we say good mix? "the balance between precision and spontaneity" --yeah, i get that too. Since function is always over fashion, i tend to spontaneity over precision. Precision is for Ai --and some classical players. What a fine song, Ron. I can see why you;d do it several ways, and it's so cool that BiaB helps so well with that. This is a great version, and the guitar seemed very presice to me. Probably cuz i was really enjoying the whole, especially the lyrics (you're the best R.W. Davis!) and the vocal. Terrific production. Powerful sound. Ha this is cool. As i was typing "powerful" Soundcloud loaded Mario's "Power." Thanks, Marty. Yeah, the more perfect I try to make a melodic guitar part the more stiff it seems to sound, so I usually just figure out a simple theme and then punch record. Sometimes it works...Glad you enjoyed the tune!

I really like the guitar riffing in the background; it has a sound somewhere between an electric guitar and a synthesizer. The singing is great. Very good song.
Laurent Thank you, Laurent. Yeah, those saturated guitar tones can pass for a synth when they're not sliding and hammering, and sometimes even when they are. It's one of my favorite guitar voices but I try not to overuse it. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Professional sounding mix, rocks really hard - those energetic backing guitars and your guitar fills melt into a really pleasant soup of perfect pop rock. The drums and the piano are punchy, those smooth vocals cut through perfectly and as always the backing vocals are tasty.
The lyrics have that romantic/bittersweet teenage love feel that is easy to relate to (in memories). Genious handling of the title in the chorus. And when the great melody is added to this list, everything screams excellence.

These are among my favorite lyrics, exactly because of how they provoke a "poor guy" feeling without the narrator actively seeking sympathy. I mean, he doesn't even think about it at all, RIGHT??? As to your question... Most RealTracks, like piano #2763, have MIDI transcripts. These are used to populate the Staff View in BiaB, but they can also be extracted as a MIDI track to drive a VSTi synth. To do this, I drag the track I want to the MID region of the Dropzone, and then from the Dropzone to my DAW. (This is a general description for how I do it, details may differ by DAW, I think. I'm like a mouse: I only know where MY cheese is.) All the piano tracks I've used this way have embedded velocity data, which helps them sound more nuanced. Piano RealTracks can sound "blurry" to my ears, depending on how they are stretched for tempo and key, I presume. So I will often use a VSTi instead.

I really like this song.
When you do guitar fills, don't be afraid to put them in the spotlight. Just from a casual listen it sounded like a synth was playing a repetitive riff under the mix. ( was that the guitar?)
I heard several places where you could easily have inserted a simple fill lasting about 6 seconds each, give or take. Starting at the 1 minute point, and 1:55 point. I noticed a few other opportunities for shorter fills between the sections. I like to use different instruments at times for the fills. It adds interest and a different texture to the overall sound. I could hear guitar as well as piano fills. For fills, just use phrasing. A few properly played and placed notes wins the day. Piano works really well for using just a few notes for a fill.
The overall song itself was really nice and has that laid back pop feel to it. Nice work you can be proud of.

What I'm calling "fills" is more like a recurring motif. Each time it's played there are differences in timing, length, approach notes, etc., but it's the same basic motif. One continuous take, no punches. The guitar sound is an overdriven tone favored by Robert Fripp and quite a few others in the pop/rock genre, but it's not used much in country that I've noticed.
