Hello,

I just built up a new system, and would like to keep my "C" partition as slim, clean, uncluttered as possible : this way making an image for recovery of the really vital data (like authorized programs, etc.), or defragmenting is simpler and faster.

The drive itself where the C partition is located is big, and so I have 2 other partition on that drive, one of them being totally free by now.

Is it possible to install BB on this free partition, or does the software need to be installed in "C" for some of its system components to work ?

Before trying that in real life, I thought it would be wiser to see if other people can anwer that.

Thanks in advance !

Hi gilles,

It can be installed on any drive. I run it as d:\bb. When I installed Realdrums, Realtracks and Realband, I simply went with the default directories and replaced the "c" with "d" for each item. Everything works fine for me. (The only place that PGMusic don't recommend the program be installed is "c:\Program Files" if you run Win 7 or Vista.)

Regards,
Noel

+1 on Noel's post

Just in case you need some reassurance, it can go anywhere you like, even an external USB drive - and PG even sells versions on external USB drives.

FAQ #44
http://www.pgmusic.com/salesfaq1.htm#44

It can run from anywhere you want it to..
Of course, especially for recording, the faster the drive path the better.

That is great news. Ive got a really nice glyph drive (100g) I think I'm going to set it up that way....Does it work the same way for PTW?

I don't think PTW comes on its own drive. I do think you can run it from any drive though.
With RB, I have fallen behind on PTW.
Last version I have (12) was only 25 meg or so anyway; the seq files (and temp audio files) can be routed to any drive, and I'm pretty sure the Realdrums can be anywhere also.

So basicly, I'd say yes. Try it and let us know.

Hi gilles, I have 3 drives and each have been partitioned into various size drives. I have my BIAB and PTPA on F: drive which is part of my first Hard drive and I store their files in my M:drive which is my third hard drive. Further, I have Cubase on G:drive which is my first hard drive and cubase files stored on I:drive which is my second hard drive. I use a various combination of file locations with no problems so you should be ok.DennisD

Thanks for the replies. I'm curious what is the definitive factor about a software that allows it to be on a non main drive or not? Myself ,Ideally, would like to put all of my music software on an external drive as I use the same p.c. for everything. .....I guess I'll ask (with the risk of being shamed) anyone run sonar from a separate drive? (I know this is the wrong forum to ask such a question but I do own nearly all of p.g.s programs too:)

Most programs write to the Registry, which must reside on the boot drive. But it's up to the programmers where they want to allow the program to reside.

BIAB is special in many ways, and that is among them. Technically, there is a tiny bit of stuff in the Registry having to do with the last 10 songs that were loaded into BIAB, but this has nothing to do with how the program runs.

It is remarkable now to have a Windows application that resides in only one place and can be moved.

You can even specify different places for the Real Drums and/or the Real Tracks. I run the program from my relatively small SSD boot drive, but have the audiophile Real Tracks on their own hard drive.

Many users here run BIAB from the supplied external drive, which can even go from computer to computer.

Kudus for PG for making products that are not Registry-dependent. BIAB is killer flexible, to use on a workstation at home and take on a tablet to a gig. Keeping program in an ASCII editable config file is not that hard to do. Too bad more vendors don't have the consideration for their users to do so.

I can see it makes it harder to pirate, but the kind of consideration PG shows its customers is what keeps me purchasing upgrades, and declining to "lend" a copy to even my closest friends.

Amen to that: I have used Biab since version 6 (I think) and ptw since 3 I'll always buy upgrades because they are great programs and notably non-taxing on the P.C.

Here's a weird question:
Is it possible to buy an external drive....Install an operating system on it and then put all music programs on it and use it on multiple P.C.s or just for music software on the go? That would be the ideal I think (If it would work) because it would store all of the music stuff out of the way but usable all together.

Operating System needs too much in the way of hardware-specific coding, drivers, etc. to be used on different machines like that.

Don't try it.

On install, PTW loads Fonts into into Windows Folder (C Drive) and registers the PG Direct X Effects. You can run the PTW program from any Drive and as an experiment I have loaded and run a version from a DVD Drive - slow but usable.
