While I am familiar with BIAB and have been using it for quite sometime, I have never used RB. Why would I want to use this program rather than the program I usually edit with -- Sonar?
Convince me.

Try opening a Biab file in Sonar  Here's the deal for me anyway.. I can do the realtrack generations in RB with much more versatility than BiaB (which makes it a 'plus' to BiaB) Because of this (and the style versatility also) I always move anything from BiaB to RB to customize it anyway. Once I am there, I can do *most* of what I can do in RB (without Sonar or any others) and still retain those generating benefits. So why leave yet? I keep on workin' with ease. If I do find a job I need to do outside RB, I'll use the export features to get the tracks out and do what I need to do. But if I keep a current version in RB I can go back quite a long way at any point to rework something (like generate a new 'break' section at any time or add a section). I find those little conveniences very nice. There are a few things in Sonar that are not possible in RB. There are many more (if you use the generating features) in RB that are not possible in Sonar. Depends on how you work I guess. I like being able to go back a year later and rework something. Try it, you may like it

I agree with rharv. After listening to some of the demos and realizing what was possible sound-wise, I purchased BIAB a couple of years ago for it's ability to quickly generate styles and tracks, not really knowing anything about RB at the time. But after a while I got curious about RB and started to fool around with it. The more time I spent with it the more I realized that RB was closer to the way I wanted to work. I like the fact that it combines BIAB's ability to quickly generate styles, realtracks, etc., within a more traditional DAW environment. To me it is much more intuitive to work with various individual tracks when I can see them all in front of me. I find that even beyond it's ability to do BIAB tricks it is a suprisingly powerful DAW in itself and does most of what I need to do. I am to the point that I hardly ever use BIAB anymore.

You may be interested in compound time signatures most of the time -> you won't be happy with RB - stick with Sonar.

RB handles compound time sigs just fine, however it does not notate them in the notation window.. if you need odd-time notation Martin is correct.

Up to Mac's challange I plugged in my drive and opened RB. After answering the setup questions, I loaded up a BIAB song I have been rethinking. It took a minute or two to render everything before I clicked play. "Okay, what's up here", I said to myself and clicked some button on the top left.
CRASH!
... open up the program again and it says, "RB crashed, would you like to use default settings?". Yep, I would. Oh, we have to set it up again... ok. Load up the song... 1-2 minutes later press play.
"Alright, let's try right clicking the guitar track too see what's behind door 1"
CRASH!
So I reboot the computer and repeat above proceedure but load a song created with the 2010.5 version. right click a track... interestinhg... hey where is the solo button? I want to listen to the guitar more closely. So I switch to the mixer view.... no solo button... oh it must be these check marks....
CRASH!
Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Didn't open a song this time but entered some chords in the chord grid. I pressed play to see what I would get....
CRASH!
So, In 30 minute of playing with RB, I see what I was missing  
This machine can run Sonar 8 Producer all day without a hiccup. BIAB never burps either. I think I'll leave RB in the box.

At that point I'd just go with Sonar.
Why waste time on it if the default setup doesn't work?
Sounds like something is wrong in the set up. Maybe drivers trying to use different bitrates or the Windows default 'windows soundmapper' selected for drivers..
At least that's my guess, if you want to try it. A whole lot of people run it reliably once set up correctly. Many of us think it is a fantastic extension to BiaB ( for exactly the "BIAB song I have been rethinking" aspect). So you can give it a fair shot with a little effort setting it up...
or stick with your comfort zone.
You asked "why would I want to use it" and got good reasons.
Now it seems to have morphed into 'it doesn't work for me'.
If you want help setting it up, people here will help. If you want to disgard it because it doen't just fire up and play; no problem here.

If you already have another audio app open, such as BiaB, and that app is setup to use ASIO audio drivers, attempting to open another program that is set to use ASIO drivers can result in the type of crashes you describe. Set one to use MME.

I've used RB since it first came out at least 6-7 hrs a day. I've done lots of songs. I use it to play out live. It rarely crashes. On the rare occasion that I do something and it does I've saved my setup file elsewhere. Just have to go to File/windowsetup/load...

Robb, i feel your pain, Reaper acts like that for me. I use both PT and RB all the time to playback and record stuff, i have very few issues.
When a software crashes consistently like you describe, it is usually the setup. I assume that since Reaper works fine for so many others, the it is my setup, and my system that is in conflict. RB is just one piece of software, and must run on ten thousand different systems, so it is rarely the softwares fault.
If Sonar runs fine, or Reaper runs fine, or Cubase runs fine use it. But if you want to dig in and really find out why the good folks here will help. Also call support and spend a few minutes on the phone with them. I can't say Rb is my favorite DAW, but i have come to really enjoy it, and it is unique.

Like the other guys, I too run RB, Powertracks, BIAB with no problems. Have only used PG products from the beginning. I use MME and 512 MB Ram with 2.4 proc.
This doesn't help you, I know, but I didn't want to use RB when it came out - I was using PowerTracks.
RTs sealed the deal, and most of what I've learned has been without the manual - so it's pretty user friendly.
What I really like - one click and you can convert all of your tracks to individual files (wavs and mids) for whatever purpose you want.
I still go back and use my PT 12 - I like the fewer bells and whistles.
But I wouldn't work on RTs in any other program - it's just too convenient to be able to regenerate all or parts of different tracks.
Call PG and work your problem - it'll be worth it.

I think I got her working now. I did have another ASIO program (Sonar) open, and the Tascam unit was set 96k which is what I use in Sonar. I set the Tascam to 44.1 after closing Sonar and all seem a go [crosses fingers].
So beside the abilities to open BIAB files and regenerate RTs, what els am I going to find here? What were your favorite discoveries?

The audio chord wizard is a real nice and to see what it can do in Real band ACW tutorial
Thanks to Rharv for this one. Another thing that is nice in Real Band is you can change styles with RTs at any bar in the song. You can also generate a RT solo anywhere in the song.

You can also generate midi parts
and since the tracks are static once you generate them, you can change the style as many times as you want without affecting the tracks you've already generated
My favorite use of RB is to create very realistic backing tracks, as follows:
1) I import the MP3 of a song I want to duplicate
2) I use the audio chord wizard to extract the chords (then doctor the results to suit me)
3) then I tempo map the song (this is a huge strength of RB. IMO, Sonar's version of this is not as good)
4) I generate real tracks or play along to recreate the song as closely as I can
5) result is the original imported track, and a duplicate version I just created.
6) then I use volume changes to phase between my version and the CD version so that the original comes forward when the vocals stop, but drops out during the vocals, leaving only my version
the result is the closest thing to true vocal redux I've been able to accomplish in any DAW. I can't do it as well in Sonar. It all boils down to the ability to tempo map the original song, and generate backing tracks that match the song

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums).
