Mac, how old is your Adamas? My Custom Legend 12, was made in 1984. It isn't a pad. It seems they treated the bowl material. I took another look at it today and it is not something applied on mine.
But, I do know that one time I polished that area and it got slippery. So I had to wash it, a little windex and it was back to normal.
Wayne,

To Mac's rather "biting" retort, I did loose 30 pounds this past 6 months and I do find that of late I do get a better grip on the Ovation.
Good one Mac!

Ha, I was told last week I had to double my calories AND drink 3 boost milkshakes a day. Not to forget I was 6 foot and 250 this time last year I'll leave my size to your imagination. Oh well. I just had 3 cookies and a boost for a bed time snack.
Whenever I polish my guitar I can't keep it on my lap either.
Never had one though. Guitar that is.
Oh not the sarcasm it's b a c k! I should go back on pain meds, I get more quality time.

I'm no longer in any condition to put polish on much. I did help the wife out and spray pledge on the shovels, which she says is no where near as good as ski wax, but that stuff comes in 12 varieties that have to get matched to the outdoor temp and the type of snow, so I'm not doing that.
Nothing like being outside in a blizzard with the lemon fresh smell of pledge on your shovel. It would sell like hotcakes here though if I repackaged it and it smelled like hot chocolate with rum. H..mmm.

John, One thing I've found that's true without a doubt, ........... is that we can count on you to post a totally unrelated and meandering response to any thread. It's like the sun coming up, ..... there's nothing you can do about it. It's gonna happen.

Wayne,
I dont own the Adamas anymore, Wayne, as stated above.
Purchased new in '98, but I think it spent a rather long time on the wall at the store...
As I recall, its "pad" was not a separate stickon type either. Seemed to be bonded into the stuff the bowl was made of, but that area was dimpled rubber-like stuff.
My problem was one of space-time.
My belly took up the same space that the guitar needed, at the same time.

I've had an Applause since the late 70's or possibly the early 80's. It has the full rounded back unlike the "skinny" back of some today's Applauses. The label on the inside (coincidentally, which just fell out this morning) says "applause - A KAMAN MUSIC PRODUCT - MODEL NO. AE14-4".
The serial number is still stuck inside. S/N 050580
I've played for lo these many years. It sits right next to me in my music/computer room and I play it while the PC is booting up or something (like the BIAB 2011) is downloading.
It has the aluminum neck and frets all in one piece. There lies the drawback. Some of the frets got worn down and couldn't (naturally) be replaced. The local music shop said it couldn't be fixed.
He was wrong. I took off the strings, cleaned up the bad frets and then applied some "Permatex Cold Weld Bonding Compound - Hardens Like Steel".
Mixed a small amount, applied it sparingly to the frets, let them dry overnight, then carefully filed them down to their original height.
It lasts for 3-8 months before I have to do it again. I should just get a new guitar but this has so many good memories I can't bear to part with it.
Anyway, just a heads-up on what to watch for it you're buying a used one. Good luck! LLOYD S

You can check out the "vintage" of your Ovation/Applause here: http://www.ovationguitars.com/support/crack_the_codeMy 6 digit S/N showed a production date of 1975. (You'll need to choose the "Series" first. LLOYD S

Thanks LLOYD, I copied the link. Very useful. I contacted Ovation for a truss bar wrench and they sent me one. I asked them about this Ovation and another one, a solid body 12 string, 1977 Preacher Deluxe. They gave me the dates they were built. They had records on all special orders from Manny's Music. This was just this past summer. They are still a great company. The Custom Legend 12 had to be made special because I wanted it in Black. They didn't make factory colors on these yet. In those days Manny's Music could get anything.

Some time back, my brother picked up one of those for cheap. The reason it was so cheap was because of worn frets and a warped neck.
The shop verified that repairing it wasn't cost effective, so we tried straightening it with a hammer.
It didn't take much to break the neck in two. It turned out that it was made of a composite of some sort - it looked more ceramic than metallic.
Ah, well...

As far as I can tell, it's only the fretboard and the frets that are aluminum. The rest of the neck is, as you say, some other material.
If anyone else has one with a warped neck, you may be able to straighted it by just removing the strings and carefully putting it into a vice. Then add heat (even just boiling water) TO THE FRETBOARD ONLY. Then twist it straight and hold it until it cools.
Just a thought. I've never had to try it. LLOYD S

Thanks again LLOYD. The only work I had done on this guitar was replacing the first 5 frets. They were the only ones too worn. My guitar tech who's gone now got the fret wire from Ovation so it was a match. That was 12 years ago. He also made a nice bone nut for it. Wayne,

Ovation guitars, the back and part of some of the necks, are made from the same material that most helicopter blades are made from. George Kaman made a fortune on the design and composition of this new type of helicopter blade. He was also a guitar player so he could afford to play with exotic materials (his own)and build his own. Many years back my sister in law worked for Kaman Bearings an industrial offshoot of his Kaman company. I could have gotten an Ovation at manufacturers cost, however I wasn't particularly enthused about the slippery back and the mostly forward projection of the guitar. A little bit of trivia. DennisD

I had a KMD 100 watt combo guitar amp - same company. Here was the problem with that amp - the effects 'loop' was really BEFORE the preamp. It wasn't an insert at all, just a different place to plug in. Very crummy design.
