BiaB has not user controlled setting for that, it is permanently locked to 16/44.1

If the OP is using only one RB file that was created with ASIO drivers to test the sound device operation, it may be that the file itself has become corrupted. I recall having one soundfile like that and I never could get it to play without the ring-modulated distorted sound using any of my ASIO drivers. However, switching to MME drivers would allow that file to play. Any files created after that point inside RB would work just fine with the ASIO drivers. Never figured that one file problem out.

The distortion that the OP describes sounds like what ASIO drivers here will sound like if the bitrate is set to something other than the rate of the sound file. That's a clue.

And if the Focusrite is set up to also play Windows sounds, that *might* be what's causing this problem. Windows sounds are at 48KHz and if a Windows sound is called, it might be switching the card over to 48 from 44.1 - rather than attempting to do SRC. But maybe it is not switching BACK to the host program samplerate after the Windows Sound call. Try turning off all windows sounds in control panel as an experiment.
