Jazzband, have you plugged it using the 2 USB plugs? You can always double-click on the COMPUTER icon and look intot that folder for all your drives: C: D: and the USB Drive should be there too.

This is hard to answer without knowing what type of hard drive enclosure PG Music sent you.
On mine, there is a power supply, one USB cable, and a power switch on the back, along with a switch for the case fan. Assuming you have everything set up correctly, then the drive should appear.
Try testing it on another computer.
Try testing another device like a USB flash drive on that XP computer. It is possible to alter Plug & Play in Windows so it is not automatic.
Check for any Read Me notice enclosed with the drive.
If no joy, call PG Music Support. The drive might also be defective or have been damaged in shipping.

The first thing that happens is the "found new Hardware" wizard. Click on "not this time" /next/auoto install/finish. That should do it. If the found new HW wizard does not show then maybe the drive came unplugged internally.

Good point. I had one that came loose in shipping. 30 seconds, to open the case and plug it in securely, fixed it.

Great, Dave. So I can conclude that you have a USB external hard drive that uses the Y cable?
It's useful to know this answer, in case the same question comes up again. PG Music has changed their drive suppliers over the years, and it is good info to know they still use the ones requiring the Y cable. Mine is an audiophile drive, which is an entirely different style.
Although you fixed your problem, it may also have to do with which USB port you used originally. Some supply more power than others and may be sufficient to run the drive without the Y cable. The ones built in to the motherboard, usually two on the back panel, are often the best to try. Alternatively, sometimes it works OK with a powered hub and one cable.

It is also important to use the right USB plug at the end of the cable, it may still work with only one connected.
The printed isntruction card that is in the box with the drive shows which of the two can work by itself. The other is only power, no data. It is there "just in case" your computer has USB port that does not supply enough current to run the drive, you attach the second one also, which provides double the current. You may need that and you may not. Also worth trying USB ports on front and back (or side) of the machine as sometimes the computer mfrs make some of them able to supply more current than others. The ones with less current will work okay with lower power things like mice and keyboards but not with hard drives.

When they first started selling the packages on hd's, they were using Y cables. I ordered one and it didn't work so I sent it back. PG Music said it worked fine for them. I ended up installing from cds, but went out and bought a powered usb hub and also a powered 500gb ext hd. I'm ordering the upgrade next week which will come on an hd. I'm hopeful that all will work this time.

A note about how to use the two USB connectors may be in order.
If you find that use of the "proper" single USB connector does not work because your computer's USB port may not be supplying enough power, then you should try using both connectors at the same time.
BUT - in a lot of instances, plugging both in one at a time may not provide enough current to start the drive. This is a timing issue.
If that happens, try disconnecting the USB cable at the drive side, then connect both USB ports to your computer one at a time and then connect the cable to the drive "all at once" at the little conentor on the drive instead. This will provide the startup power to the drive and not let it become in a locked state as it may when connecting the USB plugs one at a time.

This is how Ive always done it and never have an issue. An even better way is to plug the whole mess in with the computer powered down then fire it up. I know it should be hot swappable. The first drive I received with 2009 the 80G one , must be attached before power up. If not The computer shuts down the USB ports.Even with both ends of the wye cable plugged in first.

Boot sequence.
It can be set to boot from the memory stick (and may be trying to) before booting from the hard drive.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Mine won't boot it I have my ext. HD turned on. It's powered internally.
Certainly lots of little nuances to be aware of. Many thanks for those tips, guys.
Now I'm on my to order the 2011 Everything upgrade.
