I know somebody here will be able to help.
I have a friend with a restaurant. He HAD 2 Bogen amps that he used to send/mix the music throughout his restaurant. There are 6 zones. BOTH amps went this week. (20+ years old)
He uses a stereo receiver to supply the music & then it went to the 2 amps.
He has a total of 20 speakers in the place. I just can't get my head wrapped around what he needs/should get. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mick

I should also add that 1 zone is for a mic to make announcements.

These type of installed systems are fundamentally different than music PA systems. On many of the systems, each individual speaker has an amplifier that is built in that draws power from the DC signal passed from the distro amp. The distro amp supplies both the music as well as DC power on just 2 wires. It's a different situation than trying to drive 20 speakers with the AC music signal from an amp.

We normally don't deal with that here in this forum. I would suggest your friend find a local NSCA qualified business (National System Contractors Association) that can come in and assess the situation and suggest some equipment. This should be a no-brainer for one of these guys. Member Directory is here: http://www.nsca.org/Home/IndustryResources/MembersontheMap/tabid/360/Default.aspx

My skeptic's eye is trained on the 'Both amps went this week' comment, as being possibly indicative of some design or wiring situation that loaded the 2nd amp improperly when the first amp died - but that's just the internal Sherlock Holmes wanting to have some fun.

All he needs is an amp that has 70 volt output and speakers with either 70 volt transformers on them or existing speakers that have the transformers added.

I'd go with the Kitchenaid, though Cuisineart makes really good mixers too.....

I agree with both Scott and Mac - this is more like an industrial system than your average hifi. Because these are running on 70 or 100 volt line, it's probably best to leave it to a specialist.

Having said that, I'd pick Cuisineart over Kitchenaid every time.

The guy that made my Synthophone wireless is going to repair the Bogens.
Thanks for your replies. I probably would have screwed something up trying to help.

Both Kitchenaid & Cuisinart are good brands!

Thanks again,
Mick

ROG is agreeing with me now even BEFORE I post...

The Bogen system is most likely using 25V or 75V Lines to the many speakers. Look behind one of the speakers and you'll likely see a transformer at each speaker. That is how they can attach so many speakers without worrying about Impedance issues.

You can also look at the back of the Bogen amps to sede which connections are being used for the speakers.

Again, it will most likely be either "25V" or "70V" line, although it *may* be the 100V line, which is not as common.

Replace the amps with either more Bogen or one of the import amps that feature the correct voltage output.

Don't see why he would even need a mixer, but if he does, any good mixer can be connected to one of the Line Inputs of the proper amps.

This is really a job for a commercial installation type person as it falls way outside the type of systems that bands use and know.

Geez, as soon as I saw the post I thought KitchenAid. LOL. Beat ered me to it. Next time I'll whip up something bitter.

What's good for the mix is good for the master. Eh?

Good choice, however if you find you still require some help screwing things up I am available.

PS: Kitchenaid & Cuisinart, what ever happened to the good old Betty Crocker mixers? I am just guessing digital killed them.

Mac - I just knew you were going to say something sensible, as always!

John - Yeah, you're right. I must learn to pay more attention to what I'm reading!

It's half past midnight here and I think I need some sleep. Have a good weekend guys and sorry for the mix-up.

A wise decision IMO.

There is likely very little broken inside them, they are built like the proverbial tanks. I suspect something relatiely simple such as shorted rectifiers, since apparently they both went out at the same time. Powerline spikes or lightning can do that.
