Charlie Lui is a virtuoso dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) player. He began his musical life as a cellist, but turned his focus toward the dizi, eventually travelling to China to study with dizi master Mr. Wei-Yu Tan, professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Lui also plays a wide variety of Chinese wind instruments such as the modified chi-ba, xiao, xun, koudi, paixiao, bawu, and hulusi. He won multiple awards at the Kiwanis Music Competition in Vancouver.

Lui is the principal dizi player and general director of the the largest Chinese music organization in North America: BC Chinese Music Orchestra. He is also a member of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. In 2008, Charlie co-founded Pentatonics; a group focused on lively renditions of Chinese, fusion and popular music.

Lui has performed on many CDs, including Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra’s "Imagined Worlds" (2010) and composer Jin Zhang’s "Tracing" (2008). In 2011, he premiered concerto grosso "Tsu-ur Song" by Dr. Ning Wang with the Nu: BC and the BC Chinese Music Ensemble in a Canada-China collaboration.
