Has anyone scanned the latest build with their anti-virus software? I've noticed with build 299, I get a "not an archive" message (I'm using ESET SS version 3 and version 4). Never had this occur prior to build 299. I downloaded the update on both an XP and Vista box (for scanning purposes), and both produced the same message. No viruses or other indications, but made me curious if anyone else has scanned 299.

I scanned with Avast 4.8 and received no message at all.

Norton didn't want me to run the installation. I think the message was something about it not being something that anyone else had a history of running. It let me over ride and do the install. The message wasn't that there was a virus, just that I was running something that apparently didn't have a history in their data base.

Ian and Keith,

Thanks for your time in checking this out. Here is an update and essentially what I submitted to PG Support:

After downloading the latest BBW 2010 update (build 299), and scanning the file with my anti-virus sw (ESET SS versions 3 and 4, both up-to-date), presented the following message"

"INNO » files.info - file is not an archive"

All previous BBW/RB/PT files/updates, etc., have not presented any errors over the years. Has PG changed the archive type in Build 299 vs. previous versions?

ESET does deep scanning of nested scanning archives (by default), and the following list is the archive types ESET supports:

7Zip, Ace, ARJ, Astrum Installer, AutoIt, AutoHotKey, BAT2EXE, BZip2, Cab, Chm, Dbx, Gzip , Inno Setup, ISO, Lha. Mbox, Mbx, MIME, MSI, NRG, NSIS, QuickBatch, RAR, SIS, Tar, Thinstall, TNEF, WISE Installer, UUE, ZIP, ZIP64, UDF.

I have run a scan using Microsoft's Security Essentials(MSE) running on a Vista box with no warnings. However, MSE is not quite as robust.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

An update...I just downloaded PTW 2010 and get the same indication regarding the archive (file not archive).

Yep, I downloaded on the first day the update appeared and got a similar message from Norton saying I was one of the first to try and download the file and downloading was not recommended until they knew more about it. I've got to confess I didn't take any notice.

Like Ian, my Avast paid it no mind. I wonder what was different about the file this time, though, that caused any of the checkers to flag it.

I'd think that the difference is likely in the Virus Definitions for the software that detects this file as a false positive.

Just a quick update...I ran the same virus signatures, engine, etc. against the previous five BBW updates, and those present no issues. Some other virus checkers don't scan below a certain level in nested archives (i.e., the level is set to no scan as deep, and hence they may not flag a potential problem). One trick of malware in self-extracting archives is to nest, for example, zips within zips, or other compression archives within different type archives. So while this may be a 'false positive', it would suggest PG Music has changed their archive method between build 299 (as well as the latest PTW 2010 program download...see edit to previous post). I do not connect my music workstation to the internet. I download updates on one or more systems, scan those, then if they check out, migrate the updates to my workstation. While I keep my workstations backed up to the hilt, I do not want to have to rebuild it due to a virus. Anyway, when I hear back from PG support, this might get cleared up.

Hi,

We do not know what is causing that, however we have submitted false positive notifications to Symantec and ESET.
