I am having a unusual set up problem. I have been unsuccessfully trying to set up my desktop dedicated DAW. I have a Layla 20 interface system that works well with my Cubase VST, PG Essential Rock Guitar, and PG Essential Blues Guitar. However it does not work with BIAB, PT, RB, Master Jazz Guitar Solos, Master Flatpick, Blues Piano, unless I change the midi options to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. The sound using this option seems to be distorted. I have compared the option screens between the Essential Rock Guitar and the BIAB/PT/RB/Master Jazz/etc., and they are set up the same. Has anyone got any suggestions. Would appreciate anything. Thanks Dennis

Sounds like it could be that the Layla may be set to a locked bitrate/bit depth other than 16/44.1
Peruse the software control panel for the Layla, also the dreaded manual, to see if there isn't a setting that unlocks the card and allows host programs to change that parameter.

Mac, thanks for the reply and sorry for the tardy response. I checked and the rate is locked at 44.1. I have been working through other parameters and am quite frustrated with my problem. However I finally got a message stating "error opening input driver not supported" "error opening output driver not supported". So I changed drivers to "SBlive midi uart" and I get a signal although somewhat distorted probably because the signal is using the layla host cable as that is the only cable connected to my computer. The strange thing is that 5 years ago I was able to run BIAB, PTPA, Cubase, lessons. I could choose to run them through the layla or through SC8820. I could also sync the layla or sc8820 to cubase or a roland vs880. Go figure. Anyway thanks Dennis

Look for a setting that UNlocks the card such that different host softwares can tell it what bitrate to use.

So you can hear audio ok, but not MIDI (unless you use the GS Wavetable, which sounds distorted for some reason). The Essential Blues Guitar program (video guitar lessons) doesn't have any MIDI in it, only audio. On the other hand, programs like the Blues Pianist and Master Flatpick ONLY have MIDI.
Open up Band-in-a-Box and go to the MIDI Driver Setup.
-- What are all the MIDI output driver options listed there? -- Are you using a DXi synth? -- In the Audio Settings, is MME or ASIO selected? -- If you open the Band-in-a-Box song \bb\Tutorial - Audio Harmonies\Listen.MGU, do you hear both the vocal track and the MIDI style? -- Which version of Windows do you have? -- If Windows XP, what devices are selected in Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Audio? -- I would expect that you'll be able to hear both MIDI and audio parts if you select the VSC-DXi as your MIDI output in Band-in-a-Box - can you try that?

Mac thanks again for more suggestions. I tried running the system with the bit rate locked and unlocked in the Layla20 software and it did not make any difference Andrew thanks for taking the time. I have answered you questions below. Open up Band-in-a-Box and go to the MIDI Driver Setup.-- What are all the MIDI output driver options listed there? Microsoft MIDI Mapper Layla20 Midi Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synth A: SB Live! MIDI synth B: SB Live! MIDI Synth SB Live! MIDI UART -- Are you using a DXi synth? No. -- In the Audio Settings, is MME or ASIO selected? ASIO is selected as Layla is an ASIO audio -- If you open the Band-in-a-Box song \bb\Tutorial - Audio Harmonies\Listen.MGU, do you hear both the vocal track and the MIDI style? On “Listen”I hear the just the vocal track although I can’t see if the extension is “.mgu” -- Which version of Windows do you have? Windows XP Pro SP3 -- If Windows XP, what devices are selected in Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Audio? Sound playback default device is Layla20 5-6 analog out. Sound recording device is Layla 20 1-2 in. I use the 5-6 analog out because Cu base “likes it” better. Layla20 is a 10 in 10 out rack. -- I would expect that you'll be able to hear both MIDI and audio parts if you select the VSC-DXi as your MIDI output in Band-in-a-Box - can you try that. I don’t have VSC DXi as an output drive although I do have it as a box to click “use VSC/DXi synth. When i click that box all I get is a “braaaaaaaaccccckkkk” sound that the only way to stop it is to exit the program. Hopefully you may have some other suggestions. I did find some interesting comment about Layla20 on AudioMasters September 2008. Which ranged from incorrect install, bad resistors, not enough voltage to drive card, etc. Thanks for taking the time with my problem. Dennis

Well, my work around was simple but I didn't want to go that route. What I did was take the line out from the soundblaster card and run it through my mixer board. Uses up another two tracks if I want stereo though. I use the line outs for audio from my layla20 as originally set up. I am not sure on the sound quality of the Soundblaster card these days. Would this be a job for the Ketron (sp) that Mac talks about. DennisD
