Computer wise that is. I recently picked up a virus or something. It was one of those " you have a threat, click here and clean up it up" deals. Then it began to ad redirect cookies, and all such crap. After trying Malwarebites, super antispyware, crap cleaner, dr. cureit, and one or two more. Running Microsoft essentials AV about four times, I decided to download Avast, AV as i always had great success with it not allowing stuff on in the first place. When i did after a reboot windows will not longer load. It is dead as a doornail!!
So i dug into my old linux fedora redhat boot, which had stopped working and fiddled a bit and now have it open and running. The problem is that my wife has about a gazzillion old e-mails that she does not want to lose on Outlook express, and i do not know how to access them. I have been told by Cox, our service, that they are on the hard drive and not on their server, since we needed to check a box that said "save all e-mails on server" Great!!!!! Since i used webmail for my e-mail client, i was able to retain them when i openned up under linux, but is there a way to access the files and reclaim that astuff or is it a completely lost cause?
Heck if I could get windows to boot even under safe mode I could click that box and save and maybe open under some e-mail client in fedora, and save the day!!? Any ideas?

Not sure what version of windows you have, but on my Windows XP computer, Outlook Express emails are stored in something like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{6724CCDA-E231-62EB-.........}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
..that has files like inbox.dbx, folder1.dbx, sent items.dbx, etc.
Assuming you have connected up your hard drive to another computer, try doing a search on the drive for inbox or inbox.dbx to locate the folder.

IF you want to copy the emails, it should be easy enough to Google or check Help in outlook to find the folder.
Your post is kind of confusing when you mention using webmail and viewing the emails; if they are online leave them there for the time being.
However you have to consider if that is where the virus originated ... and whether copying them to anything would be wise.
Is there an option to 'repair windows and save all data to C:/MyBackup' if you use the restore disk or boot to the backup partion? There is a big difference between repairing windows (saving existig data), and reinstalling windows (which wipes out the disk usually). So I hesitate to ask.
Proceed with caution.
I thought some Linux guys would chime in by now. Just giving what little advice I feel safe giving.

Without knowing more about your system and what you've done to get Fedora working, I think the adage "don't do anything until you know exactly what to do" may be very appropriate. With that warning in mind, I just checked the latest version of Puppy Linux (version 5 which boots and runs from a cd) and discovered it has an "import data" in its email client. It may or may not be the solution to your problem, so proceed with care.

If you have access to your original install key, and an XP boot disk - If you updated to IE8 then it MUST have IE7 on the boot disk (NOT ie8 nor ie6 according to my lead tech IIRC) and try a repair install - best to have a clone copy first. This is not a guaranteed fix but you might get enough of your Windows install back to get the email functioning.

I use Linux exclusively now. Go to:Computer and you should see you're windows folder. Double click on that and your mail is in Documents and settings.
Also if you've got Linux working properly DL the Linux version of Avast and scan that Windows folder. With Windows dormant you'll have a better chance of fixing things unless the bug has totally destroyed things. You could also pull the HD out of that machine & either put it in a USB caddy or hook it up as a slave and scan with Avast. The key here is to have Windows not up and running on that drive.

Good advice everyone. I will take a good look at that tonight. I tinkered around last night. I have to be very careful as even linux has a hard time booting. It took ten tries last night to boot up fedora. I beleive it has to do with a package i installed cause it was fine prior to that. I am a Linux newbie for sure. But i have most things working on in now. I just have to get printer support and i will be good to go. I have internet (mozilla firefox) E-mail cox webmail for me, and thunderbird for the wife, and open office.org for word and excel. I will try to find here e-mails in the locations you mentioned, and if I can't find them she will have to just start over.
Where the problem started i believe is that she has a habit of browsing out of here e-mail. She will open a incoming e-mail and it will have cool ads and stuff like that she is interested in and she will search out of that link. I might be wrong but i do not think that is protected under the AV as it is looking at the default browser.

My lady likes to do the same thing. She got a bug on her laptop from one of these scams because she "clicked here to clean it up". I can't remember the name of it now but Avast or Spybot found it but couldn't permanently remove it because it was it's own mini browser and while it looked like it was removed, when the machine was rebooted the browser reinstalled itself, called home and installed the bug. What I managed to do was to go into the task manager/processes and at least turn it off for that session. It stayed off as long as the pc wasn't rebooted. Finally a friend did the Linux trick, went into the inactive Windows folder and deleted it.
After all that, she still surfs around when she's bored and is likely to click on anything. All you can do is love them anyway and clean up the mess with a smile. I learned a long time ago getting upset with her doesn't work...

Well, if the threat alert didn't come from the antivirus software that you have installed on your machine, sad to say, you probably didn't have a virus until you "clicked here" to clean it up. My brother-in-law is contantly falling for that no matter how many times I've warned him against it. He browses to websites that have that message pop up that says a virus has been detected. The message is actually something that is programed into the website and not comping from your antivirus software. The best thing to do is hit alt-ctrl-delete and close your browser from the task manager. Trying to nagagate away is usually unsucessful and clicking on the offer to "clean up" your machine is what actually infects you. Then the website quite often wants to sell you something else to clean it up.
i recently moved my outlook mail from my old work computer to a new one using the same proceedure that Andrew outlined.

My daughter did something like that, clicked on the Your computer has a virus.
I had to use IE to download a new firefox version and it went away. That's all that was wrong, the stupid thing hijacked the browser and insisted on going to that website only. Took only a few minutes once I figured it was the browser that got corrupted.
May not be the same for others, but that worked for me, after 3 tries to go back a few versions after uninstall, and then move back up to the current version.

Due to the tyranny of time zones, I've just come onto this thread. I'm one of the Linux guys and I'll still offer my 2 cents worth.
I'm putting in a plug for the Kaspersky Rescue Disk. It's a free, Linux based, self booting CD. with the Kaspersky anti-virus on it. As soon as you boot it, you can click on the update tab and it downloads the latest updates.
I was given an infected WinXP laptop, which had been scanned by numerous Windows anti-virus programs but was still playing up. I booted the Kaspersky CD, updated the data base and started scanning, Several hours later, Kaspersky reported 69 viruses that none of the Windows anti-virus programs had found.
The beauty of this program was that once the viruses were cleaned, the laptop was handed back to the owner with all its operating system and data intact.

Hope you can recover your e-mails.
I use the firewall but other than that, no anti-virus stuff. Every one I've tried is like HAVING a virus ALL the time.
It's rare, but when I get a virus or whatever, I just rebuild from scratch. I can do it in a couple of hours and find it much faster than trying all sorts of things to fix the problem. Of course that won't get the e-mails back.

There is the answer that avoids the entire hassle altogether.
Teach your children (and wives) well.
If you encounter that kind of message, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down the browser. You can then just start the browser again, but don't try to surf back to that page again, for example, if you have IE8, don't accept its offer to restore the previous session, tell it to go to your home page.
Works every time it is tried.

Actually i wish i had taken a look at this last night that might have been a good idea. After three hours of hassle i bit the bullit and downloaded Ubuntu, and it took all of 45 minutes to have it up and running with internet and e-mail support. I still have to figure out a driver for my printer, but have high hopes. The system is smooth and fast. I did not dual boot i actually installed over everything to get a clean system. Heck if that does not pan out i can always just install windows over it again.
I had redhat fedora, but something never was right in it, and for some reason it did not want to let me upgrade it evn though i read and re-read the instructions. So I went another direction.
I will let y'all know how it goes.

You will love Ubuntu 10.04 as long as it's Internet, email, normal stuff . Do not DL programs that are not part of the repositories. Get everything via synaptic package manager.

Sadly i had to eliminate Ubuntu and go back to Fedora red hat version 13, ubuntu while very easy to load and setup, would not find my printer no matter how i tried. I remember that last ime i loaded ubuntu it would not access my wireless internet, and fedora would. Ubuntu seems to have more programs in the repository, but they are far harder to access and install. Fedora is farther along when it comes to loading software. I grabbed my ISO disk and in 15 minutes it was loaded and running on the Hard drive.
30 minutes more and both e-mail accounts were up and running and i had printer support working with open office.org. Tonight i will install wine and begin to add a couple apps that i need from windows. I have already found them on the wine supported list. After that i will just move on and use fedora as it is.

Using Wine defeats the purpose of Linux. If you need Wine I'd just do a complete reinstall of Windows. You'll be much happier. Wine sucks really.
