When I import an audio track into BIAB, will it recognize the chords involved? So for instance, if I import audio and then use the 'Keyboard Wizard' to play along, will all the notes I play be automatically put in tune with the chord changes?

Not immediately or automatically upon import of the audio, no.

The Audio Chord Wizard must be used to try to derive the chords first. There is also some input needed by the user in order to get things to work right, the Audio Chord Wizard works okay for some audio files, the simpler ones, may not be able to find all the chords to more complex musics, though.

If you are talking about the Keyboard Wizard Play-along feature, here is the beginning of the Help file:

"The Wizard is a "play along" feature that allows you to use the computer keyboard to play along with Band-in-a-Box. The neat part about the Wizard is that it ensures that whatever you play sounds good!

The Wizard will also play Harmonies according to the Thru harmony setting."

You can read more about it in Help, Wizard Play Along Feature.

Matt,

Was vaguely aware of the "play along" but didn't know it had that kind of
capabilities.

Wording is statement/question ????
Was at a loss on how to word it..

If you stripped the melody from an existing BIAB or midi file, then
used the play along, it would generate something decent that would match the chords.?

Thanks,

Seeker

Yes. The Wizard Play-along follows the chords.

Try it by playing the same note (key) as the chords change, and you'll see (hear) the note change.

"Something decent" is a value judgment; be aware it selects only tones within the chord on one row of keys, or only passing tones on a different row. You can always edit later. You can also turn off the "Smart Notes" feature in the Play menu, so you can actually generate a chromatic scale on the computer keyboard.

Also, you can record what you play with the Wizard. Again, read the full Help file.

This is a good trick for recording a difficult rhythm: record using the Wizard Play-along and then edit the pitches later!

It's really a pretty nifty feature.

One little thing: the Help file has not been updated in one respect, since it says to turn on the feature you should look for a checkbox to the right of the song title. In version 2011 at least, that checkbox now appears on the far right above the piano keyboard. You can always just use the Play menu, too.

Thanks for all the feedback. Can anyone recommend a program that might work better at detecting the chords in an audio file?

The Audio Chord Wizard in BIAB may be the best tool out there at the moment.
