I guess I will always be challenged by chord notation in BIAB, so please bear with me. I am trying to notate C#maj7 (add 13) in a song in the key C. I thought I could type "C#maj7/13" and get what I wanted, but BIAB converted it to Ebmaj7. First, am I correct in how to enter the add 13 chord? Second, is there a global switch in opts to turn off BIAB's conversion of chords? I have looked and haven't found an answer to the second question.

Thank you.

C#maj13 Later, Ray

P.S. You'll find the chord list in the manual and in BIAB help.
in reading your post again it's unclear whether you want a C# or a C chord with a maj 7th. If it's a C chord with major 7th and a 13th then write it Cmaj13

I assume you are trying to enter a "C#Maj13" (C#, G#, E#, C and A#) which is how BIAB would intrepret a C#maj7 (add 13). Does that sound right??

Or, what Ray said above...

Thanks. As may be all too evident, I am not very knowledgeable with chords, so I assumed C#maj7 (add 13) was somehow different from C#maj13. I've learned something new once again.

Are you trying to avoid 9 and 11? Because c#maj13 should give you maj7, 9, 11 and 13.

SmoothJohn is correct; technically there is a difference. For BIAB, though, you must use the maj13 construction since the "add 13" is not supported.

Yes, if you tell BIAB to play a CMaj13, the selected style will determine how the chord is actually voiced and you will likely get any and all of those notes. I just checked with a JazBallad style and confirmed in the first bar over a Cmaj13 the piano plays Root, 5, 7, 9 with the right hand, and the 3 and 13 with the left hand. Upon regenration I suppose it would all change again.

To a newbee this is always confusing when working with BIAB - but is actually the magic of the program at the same time.

Simple answer: I don't know. I was developing a backing track for Jobim's "If you never come to me" and the chart I was given had "C#maj7 (add 13)" at bar 2. For the back track I suppose it really doesn't matter, but for my solos over that chord it could, if "add 13" means not using the 9 and 11th of C#maj. Your thoughts?

Are you doing the song in the key of"D"? If so, the second chord is C#maj7. The melody is the 13th or 6th. At least according to the lead sheet I have. In soloing I think most players would be thinking of the C#maj7 and not worry about the 13th. My thoughts, Ray

For that particular instance, you likely would do best to simply have BiaB play the C#maj7 chord.

Hi. I see this thread is way too old, but I think I have the solution: B♭m9/C♯ is an enharmonic of C♯maj7add13, that is, it has the same notes but with a different chord name. C♯maj7add13 can also be considered as C♯maj7add6. The same way, C♯add13 is equivalent to C#6 and also to B♭m7/C♯.

The reason why we use to consider thirteenth instead of sixth or eleventh instead of fourth or ninth instead of second is that they have a whole octave in between, and thus the dissonance caused by the strange note (in our case, the sixth over the major seventh) is less.

Regards.
