Audio Technica Midnight Blues Hypercardioid Dynamic Instrument Microphone:
Hello everyone, I need some advice on chosing a microphone. I would like to mic my singing and playing on my ukulele. I have a Behringer 45 watt two channel amplifier that I want to hook into. My question is what is the best mic for this situation. Another way to ask is could any single microphone carry my voice & ukelele to the amp. Is an omni directional best suited for this task? Where would the microphone best be placed...maybe half way between my mouth and the soundboard of the uke?? Would the above mentioned microphone be suited for this task? Can anyone recommend a better microphone in the same price range. This is the first time I have ever tried using a microphone so any and all help would be appreciated. So, I would really like to use just a single microphone. Thanks for any help you can provide.

My recommendation would be two mics, one, a cardioid dynamic or hypercardioid dynamic, such as the Shure SM58 or the newer Shure Beta58 or he Audix OM-5, for your vocals.

For the ukelele, I would recommend either the Shure SM-57 or the Audix OM-3.

And two mic stands, maybe with booms if necessary for positioning each mic.

Does that "Behringer 45 watt amp" have Low Impedance, XLR inputs?

What is the exact model of the amp? A guitar amp is typically not fullrange and does a poor job at vocal reproduction, but some of the "Acoustic Guitar Amps" have mic inputs on them that cna do the job.

Thanks Mac, for your reply. It's nice to have your help. Yes, it does have an xlr mic input but as far as the impedance I don't know? I will see if I can find the manual. My Behringer model is: ultraacoustic acx 450. Thanks again for your help Mac.

Mac, the input impedance of the mic is 4k ohms. I don't know if that's considered low or not?

Bert, You can't go wrong following Mac's advice. Another important thing.....will you be singing & playing "Standing or Sitting"? The boom mic stands are important here, whatever position they are used in.
If possible, I always stand....it's easier to sing & it makes for a better presentation IMHO.
Experiment until you feel comfortable. Good luck! Joe G.

Hey Joe, thanks for the reply. I will be sitting most probably all the time. I will be playing and singing for my own entertainment. I mostly wanted to amp the uke as it doesn't have a lot of projection. Also, I like the idea that I can shape the sound with the amps built-in fx and equalizer. Also, like everyone else I'm trying to save on $$$. Yes, I have great respect for Mac. The mics he suggest really are about twice that of the one I mentioned. I still may go his route but then I would need two mics costing around $200.... A little steep for a retired bloke.
