Scott, here is Don's answer about his bass. Sorry for the length.
Hey Matt
Bass is made by Zeta and is not in fact a Ned Steinberger creation. Zeta is the company that gained fame originally for their electric violins from the early days in the 70s and 80s. They made all of Jean Luc Ponty's elec. violins for years. My bass was their top of the line and when mine was made back in 1993 the retail price was $6500.00. I bought it used in 2002 for a lot less. Unfortunately the Zeta company, like so many other great music companies in the age of corporate monopolization and corporate Big Box music stores agreeing to only carry gear by and of the corporate conglomerates, is no longer in business. They built fine hybrid instruments on the cutting edge for many years and were the most innovative and visionary company of their kind in the 70s-90s.

OK, that makes quite a bit of sense now. If I remember correctly, seeing Zeta adverts in magazines, the Zeta 'shoulder mounted' smaller instruments had partial upper and lower bouts (your photo shows a partial upper bout), while the NS Stuff is mostly plain without artificial body sections. http://www.nedsteinberger.com/instruments/eubass.php I didn't realize that Zeta made a bass as well. Thanks for checking in with Don, and the long response was more fun to read than a simple 'nope, it's a Zeta'.

Hi Matt!
Just tuned in. "When She's Gone..." First I was impressed by the richness and precision of the fl'horn melody. Then I started to preceive the effect of the instruments supporting the melody. They balanced with such perfect sensitivity that I did not hear them so much as 'sense' them.
Movin' on now...got some great players there. Love the way the drums stay under.

Thanks! I just performed that song last week, and a few weeks before that a 60-piece orchestra did my arrangement of it. On both concerts, just for contrast with other tunes, I played soprano sax. That works too. Appreciate the kind words.

Hey Matt, I've been having a recent "rebound" love affair with the Cornet here of late as well. Found an Olds Ambassador Cornet that didn't need much to put it back to near excellent playability, and am enjoying rediscovering the Cornet's "Bebopability" ala Nat Adderley. Fun. And, I think can be a bit more articulate sounding than the Bb Trumpet for this kind of thing.

Sounds great, Mac. Very similar story. One year ago, I bought an Olds Ambassador from Eddie (here on the forum) and worked on it for several hours to get it in playing shape. I had never liked a cornet before, but was intrigued enough to explore some others. About six months ago I bought a Schilke X1A - amazing little horn. Has a nimble sound, but also dark. I'm using a GR cornet mouthpiece.
I couldn't find anything that fit well in the Olds receiver. That Ambassador is built like a tank though, and is a good spare. Would also make a good weapon - it's indestructible!
