Are you sure Hi-Q option is even available for the Drums track? I don't think that is the case, but may be wrong.

There are, however, the older "Live Drums" MIDI styles, in which the drum part was actually recorded as MIDI from live players playing on MIDI drumkits.

To find those, the Stylepicker can show which ones use Live Drums, but be aware that you would have to invoke that particular Style or use the Hybrid Style maker/editor to import into another style.

I think the whole idea is being missed about HiQ instruments. They are still only midi. There are 2 things that make them "HiQ":
1.Longer phrases recorded with a midi controller.
2. PG supplied samples for Sample Tank.

As Mac stated the midi drums have been recorded like #1 for quite some time now
There are tons of high quality drum samples out there & ST may even include drums . Don't remember. Anyways the drums have been HiQ for a while now. It just doesn't say it.

Apparently I got the Hi-Q drums by loading in parts of the amplitude sound bank, then changing the piano and bass to th e Hi Q from the dropdown for each.

It sounds a bit better to me then the regular "brushes kit" 41. I would use real tracks as I have all the jazz ones, but I am building a rehearsal book, and I need the songs to load fast and go though a dozen or so loops.

Many of the "Live MIDI Drums" styles can sound fantastic if the right MIDI synth is used.

I use a Ketron SD2 or SD4 for that and the drumkits are great sounding.

Don't sound like the standard "GM Drumkit" synths at all, and they load fast because MIDI.

But throwing the Live Drums - or any of the other MIDI available in BB - at sub par softsynths where the GM compat for playback on home computers is the most likely design parameter will never let you hear that.

Hi Mac,

Until today, I never realised there was such a thing as "Live Drums". Thank you for mentioning those. I'm going to be doing a bit of playing around.

That's my 'learn something new everyday with BIAB' moment for today.

Thanks!
Noel

Wolftone,

You've probably already done this, but I'll mention it in case others who read this thread are not aware of it.

When you go to use midi drums, it's necessary to deactivate the "Substitute Realdrums for midi drums" option found under Opt | Preferences | Realdrums.

Regards,
Noel

FOR ANYONE WHO'S INTERESTED IN MIDI DRUMS...

I notice that PG Music include a Rock Kit and a Jazz Brushes Kit in Sampletank (the Hi Q midi synth). How I set it up was ...

1. Go to the VSTi button and open the VST/DXi synth/plugins options.

2. Select the "Drums" track (#1) and then add the SampleTank synth using the dropdown menu (#2).

3. When the Sampletank synth appeared (about 30 - 40 seconds of loading time), I selected Channel 10 (#1, the midi drums channel), clicked on the dropdown arrow beside "Band In A Box" (#2), clicked on the dropdown arrow beside "Drums" (#3), double-clicked on "Jazz Brushes Kit" (#4) to load it into channel 10 (#5).

4. I then loaded a midi jazz brushes style and generated the song.

Not bad! Especially when a bit of midi reverb is added. (See image below. Click on the "Drum" track to select it and then adjust the M.Reverb setting.)

Regards,
Noel

P.S. Mac: Thanks for inspiring me to investigate "Live Drums".

You can improve the quality of the sound of the drum track in several ways.

1. replace the drum track with a drum synth which uses samples instead of midi patches. Many of the drum synths on the market do use samples.

2. use EQ on the drum track to "improve" the sound and pull it out of the mud.

Personally, I like to use EQ to try to rescue the existing PG track, but I have used Jamstix as a replacement more than once.

Rainy Day on my music page is just one that uses Jamstix.
