Thanks for all of the congrats and advice from everyone here! I knew that more than any other source, I would get the "low down" that I needed to get this started. I know where you are coming from Richard, there is much research and math to be applied here. The Engineer in me tends to make me over think the project while the budgeteer in me wants to reign that in. I have compiled all or this groups fine advice into a nice set of notes that I will use to do my planning.
In other news, I am trying to talk my wife into letting me buy an accordion. We live in an area largely populated by Czech's where polka is a musical mainstay. We even have Polka church services around here! I guess most of you have heard of Shiner Texas, home of the Shiner Brewery.
We live about 15 miles from there.

I'm guessing this also means you are in the land of the Kolache!

I've had to do quite a bit of free-lance audio-guy work in Katy, TX and environs, and one thing I look forward to when I visit is hitting the local donut shops - not for the donuts, but for the Kolaches! I'm told these come from Czech influence in the area, but I've not really researched that - I just eat them.

You are absolutely correct Scott. This truly the land of the Kolache. In fact, there are several Kolacke festivals at various times during the year around our area. I am proud to be a personal acquaintance with the "conductor" of the most popular polka band in the area, the Shiner Hobo Band. As tradition has it, the band gets paid in beer. My conductor friend employs the use of a toilet plunger rather than a Baton. Matt Finley may want to consider that for one of his upcoming gigs!

Thanks, Todd. I will indeed give that suggestion all the consideration that is appropriate! I actually prefer a chainsaw.

Congratulations on your retirement. Your post and those of others tell me that my retirement over 10 years ago was not unusual in that like others I immediately went back to work as a consultant. The problem was that the promise I made myself of really getting back to my musical chops was again put aside, although I would spend my down time (airport) time reading and counting out charts. During this period I still managed to cordinate home time with dance jobs (16pc swing band) and build a music room/studio. However, I had no time to do any recording. I built the studio in the basement so other than insulating outer walls very well I had no room for room-in-a-room. What I did in the layout was to keep the walls irregular and parallel walls short as possible. For my isolation both I ran microphone and headphone wiring into a basement bedroom which is separated from the studio by another room. It performed well in my test although I am limited to singles or duos in that room comfortably. Your potential set up sounds sight and ear watering to me and would love to see completed photos posted here if possible.
Oh and I too am supposed to be retired this year so hopefully I will be a more active participant than a lurker! regards DennisD

Dennis,

I will surely post photos of the project in progress and the finished product. It does seem that there are a lot of us retired contractors here in the group. In technical fields (and certainly others), we have a big gap in experience levels now. Many of the engineering firms (big ones like KBR,Jacobs,Fluor and the like) are scrambling to fill project positions by bringing back retirees. This is because their projects are suffering big time due to the lack of experienced engineers. There are a lot of sharp young engineers out there who will one day be the cream of the crop but they have not seen time in the trenches. To me it was gratifying that my company was very worried about my departure. I am happy to continue to do my work until I get tired of it. (and the $$ is good!).

Todd, my experience has been the same. I retired 11 years ago but have been called back to consult many times.
