Anyone who has read any of my infrequent posts will know that I live in a retirement village. If that doesn't give you an idea of my age then I happy to let you know that i turn 71 in a few weeks time. I've still got all my faculties, but I'm now starting to suffer the curse (one of them) of the elderly, arthritis. Wouldn't be too bad except that I play guitar and the arthritis is in the fingers of my left hand. I take glucosamine daily to try to keep it at bay and I would like to hear from anyone with the same problem on how they manage the condition.

I have a guitar playing friend who swears by what the chiropractor has done for his arthritis.

Tony, A friend of mine who had bad arthritis in her hands started rubbing Emu Oil into them. She's your age. The swelling went right down and she recovered a great deal of use of her hands without the associated pain. From what I've learned, Emu Oil is developing quite a reputation with aiding the discomfort caused by Arthritis. Noel

Tony, as a fellow sufferer for quite a number of years I offer my insights. While arthritis is associated with aging, there are others factors that exacerbate the symptoms. They include: diet, exercise, physical health, and mental health. I have found over the years , that, for me, certain things work. Generally I eat a low meat high vegetable diet. I supplement my food with UDO's Omega 3-6-9 oil. Serrapeptase which is a natural inflamatory has worked as well. Interestingly I was taking Hubners Silicea (liquid form) as a supplement to harden my nails and I found that it also helped. Alcohol is definitely an agitant, but at times I will pay the price. Every day I walk and I gently "back stretch" my fingers through out the day. Mentally it can be a drag because it can be so painful to play inversions of #9, or certain bar chords etc., so I try not to get down on myself for poor playing. I would try different approaches(I do) to diets, watch the amounts of alcohol/caffeine, and gently stretch. It won't cure it but it may lessen the discomfort some. Dennisd

Years ago my grandmother, with arthritis had the chiropractor break her back in 3 places due to the osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. I have both. I quit the Glucosamine after 2 months. I didn't seem to work. My doc told me 3 years later it can take 5 to 6 months to work. OK.
But my Mother is bed ridden with all that stuff, and she quit working like me at 52. I wear special shoes, diabetic socks (A Godsend), and take more pill s than should be allowed. Sunshine is the best cure. But we don't get much. I go to a tanning bed now, and take all the Vitamin supplements, but nothing can match the sun and warm weather.
For me it genetic. I can't find any other answer. I am selling my house, 5 steps between each of the 4 levels. I cannot walk in malls, on streets, and any other hard surfaces. I can walk in the forest, on dirt trails and in cranberry bogs.
My fingers are crooked, my toes point up, my elbows are very red and scaly, and my neck is stiff. My hips need replacement soon, and I have arthritis in my sternum. Good luck, it's not fun aging.

My wife buys a product called melalueca. And while I don't hawk or sell stuff like that they ahve a product called Painatrate, and it rocks stuff like uncle arthur-itis. My Dad is 93 and he swears by the stuff, claiming he could not function without it. A little bit seams to solve the issue for me. As even though i am only 52, i suffer from a light version of that ailment due to years in construction.

Thanks guys. Plenty of options there! Emu oil and melalueca are both Australian products so I shouldn't have any problems finding them. I do the stretching exercises and have a very good, alcohol free, diet. Whatever things I try, it's going to take some time before I see any results so I'll try to posts my findings in a couple of months' time.

Hi Tony, There were recently ads on telly for a product called "Pain No More", supposedly a "cure all" for all types of pain. I think it was a natural product sold in Health Food stores. I can't comment on its worthiness, but if it's not too expensive, it may be worth a try. Good luck!
Cheers, Keith

My doctor told me to cure my hypertension I should stop smoking. I did. My Mother has had hypertension since she was 50, just like me. Never smoked. Never helped. Saved me lots of money as it was 6 bucks a pack times 3 a day. Bought a van for the 5 kids.
My doctor told me to stop drinking and it would help my arthritis. My Mom is 82 and totally disabled with arthritis that ate up her back, hips, knees, fingers, etc. She started taking wine coolers at 80 to help with the pain. One a day. I quit drinking for 3 months made no difference at all. I keep a bottle for the dram to ward of of the cold, and if my hypertension is bad it drops it, and if the arthritis is unbearable, it dulls it.
My g g g grandfather was a distiller on Islay. His son carried on with the still. They sold 'cures' out of the post office they ran. They were prohibitionists. The Presbyterian minister of their gaelic church swore by the 'Morning Glory', the afternoon treatement, and the nighttime cure for the draught and cold. All were basically good old single malt with some herbs thrown in. Just like most potent cough medicines.....LOL.
I am taking (sometimes) a new class of drug called Tramacet for the pain. They took out the molecule that addicts you and the one that makes you high, but it's still a synthetic opiate. I take it at 5 a.m. when I get up. Supposed to be every 4 hours but that type of medication scares me, it still says it's addictive.

Tony, As a fellow guitarist/banjoist I can totally sympthise! Any of the other suggestions will surely help. But MY suggestion is LITOZIN (Rose Hip Syrup Powder) Capsules. I heard a doctor on TV here in UK, telling of his surprise of their effect on some of his patients. I tried them a few years ago.....made a huge difference to me, so I continue to take them..........my wife started on them last year after an op on her shoulder.....again, after 6 weeks noticed she was moving more easily. Same for another banjoist friend of mine! Quite expensive (for a Scotsman!) at £20 a box. But well worth it as my joints are still all working! Any of these MUST be combined with regular exrcise, I feel. Hope that this helps? Joe G.

Dr. Whitaker, here in the USA, is a naturalist doctor. I've been using a product called, "Forward Plus". My outlook sure cleared up. He has one called, "Joint Essentials". I ordered a bottle last week. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm sure it'll be here by next week. If you're interested then Click Here and see if what he has to offer may help you.

There's a weekly public radio program called The People's Pharmacy, hosted by Joe (a pharmacologist) and Terry (medical anthropologist) Graedon. They also write a weekly syndicated newspaper column. I've been hearing them talk about the gin-soaked raisins (really) remedy. Here's the link to their website and the specific page, and you can read other reader's comments about this "recipe". http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2005/10/18/gin-soaked-raisins-for-arthrit/Here's the recipe: Gin Soaked Raisins for Arthritis October 18, 2005 in Home Remedies [Did this remedy work? 95% said yes! (41 votes)] We have received more mail about this "raisin remedy" than any other home remedy we have written about. We don't know how it got started or why it works, but many readers swear it relieves arthritis pain. Ingredients: golden raisins and gin. Empty the raisins into a bowl and pour in just enough gin to cover the raisins. Allow the gin to evaporate (about one week) and then place the moist raisins in a jar with a lid. Eat nine raisins a day. They go well on cereal. Would love to know if this helps you, Tony!

Well we probably should make this a Sticky so it stays on the top of the OT forum since there are so many aging musicians with this aliment. I have shared my wooes regarding my deformed arthritic little finger on my fretting hand. My doc refered me to a specialist who deals with head surgery for musicians. He suggested we could remove the joint and rebuild the finger (like the bionic-man). No insuruance for that at this time, although Obama-care may make it feasible shortly. It only hurts when I play long, and It has taught me to find alternate (simpler) voicings for some chords. I am going to give some of these concocktions a try.

I have practicing Tai Chi for many years and believe that it helps joints, ligaments, and bones by improving circulation.
After the 1949 Revolution in China they found their medical staff reduced by half. Non emergency patients were given an ID card and the name of a nearby tai chi center. They could qualify for an appointment with a doctor once they had their ID card stamped every day for 3 months by a tai chi teacher.
What could this idea do in the United States today?
