Why would PG Music ever put out instructions that are usable by their customers? New installation of the software, and I'm trying to figure out how to use RealBand. The Tutorials have mistakes all over them. So, when you use File-->Open to "Melancholy Baby", or MELABABY.SEQ to follow along with the Tutorial, do you think the file is there? Of course not, making the rest of the tutorial fairly useless. Nice work, guys.

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to see you bought version 2011, as I think it can do what you previously said you want to do. I'm not so glad you seem to be having a frustrating time learning to use it. Some people find it to be quite intuitive, other people don't.

THe forum is full of knowledgeable people who are generally willing to help others get a grip on the software. However, I should probably mention that there is a natural tendency for people to back away from those who vent their frustration by ridiculing the software or company. As a general rule, you'll get more help here if you present specific problems in a positive way. The forum members don't work for PGMusic, they help others out of goodwill. Goodwill begets goodwill, if you catch my drift. Software bashing is not well received here.

But if you take time to describe specific problems in detail and provide the system specs requested by those who respond, I feel sure the forum gurus here will be more than happy to help you overcome any obstacles you may encounter.

Hi funkifized,

I just clicked on File >> Open and then went to the \Realband\Samples folder. MELABABY.SEQ was present in that folder (along with a few other songs).

Hope this helps,
Noel

That's interesting. I have 2011, too, but it was the download upgrade so my folder might be from a previous install.

With that in mind, I have just checked my 2010.5 USB drive. The folder is on the drive and the file is there under (USB drive letter)\Realband\Samples. Seems it was part of the install 6 months ago.

If it is not on the USB drive, I suggest contacting PG Music via Live Help, email or the toll-free number.

When you installed the program, which option did you choose? Run it from the USB drive, internal hard drive, etc.? (If you are running it from the USB drive, I believe that Realband creates a folder on the internal hard drive but that the main program components are not loaded into that folder. The proper program folder is on the USB drive.)

Regards,
Noel

I jumped from version 2009.5 to 2011

FWIW, The specified file isn't in my c:\realband\samples folder either. Must have been part of the 2010 or 2010.5 installation.

On a whim I also checked my USB drive ...The file does not exist there either

I've got the 2011 EverythingPak and it isn't on there. I did the full install to my hard drive but I checked the USB drive and it's not on there either :-(

I just did a microsoft search of the entire USB drive as shipped to me from pgmusic and it did not find "*mel*.seq" anywhere.

Must be an oversight.

These kind of things can be frustrating, but I'm sure that if you contact pgmusic support directlhy on this issue that they will come up with a solution for those who don't alrady have the file.

Hi Funkifzied

The Tutorial dates from the original PowerTracks Manual back in 1993 according to my records. The file does appear in my PT & RealBand Folders.

I have sent a copy of the .seq file to your Email address. Have fun

Finkifized, I completely agree with you. To try to use a tutorial and then not find the file that tutorial is based on really looks stupid. I've jumped on certain people who some in here as new users and then really dump on the software but you're not one of them, you're just frustrated. I think you're making legitimate points. Every piece of music software I've ever used has issues for a new user and I've railed about how can they let this or that go by like that. Overall, this is one of the friendliest and most knowledgable forums around and PG Music is one of the best for customer service. Don't worry we'll get you up and running. Unfortunately I know nothing about your Line6 POD, in the other thread you were having a problem with their ASIO driver. Try using the freebie ASIO4ALL. Just Google it.
Also, everything Rharv and others have said about how RB can do what you want is true once you can get past the intital setup. Just think of this little trick: You've created a tune, recorded some guitar, used maybe 2 or 3 tracks from a midi file, created a few Real Tracks, maybe a few Real Drums using a regular kit along with a separate RD percussion track and you still want to add some piano comping. You can't seem to find a piano RT that works. You can select a style, right click on any empty track and tell it to create a Biab midi piano part using any one of the thousands of styles that have a piano part in them. Some of the Biab midi parts are really very good if you have a decent synth to play them through.
There is no other software that does what RB can do but like anything else, it's not perfect either. It does have some issues with certain things but I'll save that for later.

Lets try to get you up and running in simple form and go from there.

Everything below will be in Options-Preferences area.

MIDI Devices
Set input to Pod if available (make it the only one highlited)
Set output to MS Softsynth (make it the only one highlited)
Click 'move selected device to top' (important)
Uncheck the box for 'Reroute MIDI playback to deafualt DXi/VSTi synth'.

Audio preferences
Set to MME
Click 'Drivers' button-
Set input to POD device (make it the only one highlited)
Set output to your soundcard driver (make sure it is the only one highlited), then click 'Move selected device to top' button. This is important.

Now open LatencyAdjust.SEQ (this should be in the Realband folder) in RB and hit play. You should hear the midi synth and an audio track playing out of the computer speakers or headphone jack.

If both work, now click on the VU icon in upper right toolbar, and then play thru your Pod and see if the input side of the VU's show signal.

How are we doing so far?
Turn each track down one at a time to see if you hear both audio and MIDI sound. At this point they may not be in sync, but we'll get to that shortly.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Very sorry about this guys, I have been told that the file Melabab.seq is the same as F Blues.seq which you should have. We will be updating the help menu accordingly.

Thanks for your understanding.

Okay, there is no MS Softsynth available in output. There is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, Microsoft MIDI Mapper, Line6 PODxt Live. I've highlighted Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth and moved it to the top. Let me know if this is wrong.

I've unchecked the box for 'Reroute MIDI playback to deafualt DXi/VSTi synth'.

I can hear the midi synth and an audio track playing out of the computer speakers.

I see pod input in the VU meter.

I actually fiddled with the sync yesterday and got them pretty close to synced. Now what?

Try to record (and playback) something from the Line6.

As far as the synth goes; if you can hear it, you did it right for now.

If you can record, and playback .. yer pretty much there.

After that it's buffers and syncing ... and monitoring. Using the Line6 for playback for low latency monitoring may be the challenge. If your system can run the Coyote wavetable synth, that would help. I notice it is not showing up in your list. May have to try installing it again eventually.

Well, when I play the guitar, I don't see anything going into the track. I can't hear the Line 6 through the computer speakers along with the synth.

For now, just record a track (even if you can't hear it), and if the program asks to 'Keep Take?' say yes, then see if it plays back OK. We don't care if it sounds bad at this point, we are just checking the input side of the equation.

That means the input side is working. The monitoring side (so you can hear it while you play) will be next.

Is there an option to use the Line6 as an output in the audio preferences?
Does it have a headphone jack?

Okay, I've plugged the Line 6 into an amp and can hear it through the amp. When I say yes to "Keep Take", it does record. Success! It's weird, but it's a start. There is an option to use the Line 6 as the output in the audio preferences. Does this mean that if I choose that, I'll get Real Band through my guitar amp? I think I'd rather hear the Line 6 through the computer speakers with Real Band, as I'm not sure how to mix these tracks yet, but maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture yet.

Cool, we got the Line6 recording now.

Try choosing the Line6 for the audio output. You won't hear the MIDI synth until we go back and assign the MIDI to a DXi synth (remember, we unchecked that earlier for testing) The MS GS synth will be problematic from this point on.

Hopefully you can hook your speakers (instead of the amp) to the Lne6 device in the long run and hear eveything in realtime.
Now we know the Line6 input works and its a matter of getting the Line6 output to work so you can hear everything in realtime.

Again, does the Line6 have a headphone connection? It will be handy for setting up the rest.
If so, set the output to the Line6 and listen to the headphones to see if you can hear it through the Line6.
If not, it will require someone with more experience on that device, or a little time for me to research it all.
